I got hit by a car last week Thursday and I have been signed up for months to race the NB 1/2 IRMN in Victoria this weekend, any opinions on whether I should race or not. I have no broken bones, but I have some bruising on my mid quad and on my upper leg. It is not too bad, not painful, but I am not 100% either; the leg is just a little tender. I was expecting to race it in about 4:30-40, but now b/c there are no refunds at this point I might use it as a training/just for the experience race. Is it wise to race a half with a minor injury given that I still have 5 more days to heal?
SHOULD I RACE???..You’re a triathlete, not some sissy roadie or god forbid, a marathoner. Of course you will race. I saw some guy on the run course at Eagleman with half a damn leg, you better race.
thats a decision that should probably be made on race morning. if your hurting and think the race would further your injury than your a dumbass to race. if on the other hand you’ve been training, warm up race day and feel good to go, then your probably good to go.
Two years ago 30 days prior to IM Florida I was hit by a car. Destroyed my bike (broken in three sections). Broke my wrist, badly bruised hip and chipped ankle. I was not able to run much before race day and was able to swim with a special waterproof cast. (had to have the cast cut off the week before the race) Biking was OK except for the mental aspect of it. When you get hit by a car riding in traffic is kind of different for the first few weeks back at it.
I did IMFL Had a long swim 1:30, had an OK bike 5:45, and had the most painful, mentally grueling run of my life. If I had known that the run would have hurt that much I would not have done it.
Several weeks after the race I started to get inflammation in my hip that did not go away for 8 months. I think that by doing the race I aggravated the injuries that I was healing from from the car crash. My advice is to not do the race and heal up, to race again in the future. The people who think you are whimping out are full of shit.
As one of the few who managed to get the monetary compensation he deserved after a bad bike crash, I’d advise the following;
If you’re hoping to maximize any settlement, it would be better for you to demonstrate the harm and difficulty and wasted training/opportunity caused by the bike crash - by not racing. You’re hurt, right?
Hmmm, will the car be at he race? Seriously, why are you asking strangers albeit triathlete strangers if you should race when a) we are not qualified even if we did know the facts (precise diagnosis) b) we don’t know the facts and c) we have a strong biase that is probably not healthful. You should be asking a qualified sports doctor. I don’t mean to make light of your injuries or those of others that posted, but I think you are asking to be told what you want to hear, and I won’t do it. BTW, I saw the guy with the leg prothesis coming out of the water and on the run. He is one tough dude.
