Hit and Run...with Power Data!

So I was out for a training ride last week, and was struck by a pickup truck. Although the driver kept going, the witnesses did a great job of taking care of me and calling 911. I was in the hospital for 2 days and the damage was a broken shoulder blade, a couple stitches in my knee, and a really sore lower back, but everything should heal. Had to miss racing TriHawks though.

I had my Garmin 705 going at the time though, and it was pretty interesting to look at the data afterwards. For the WKO+ screenshot, impact occurred around 55:33 when I was going about 17mph. The impact actually sped me up to about 19 mph, before I abruptly slowed down and ended up in the ditch. It was also interesting so see my HR rise so quickly right after I got hit. I think the bump in the elevation line is just an anomaly, and the truck didn’t actually throw me 10 feet in the air.

On the map you can see me riding in a nice straight line, but then the pickup strikes and I go flying into the ditch. From the place where the line veers (by the driveway) to where I ended up is about 75 feet. Note also, I was legally riding right on the white line, and not in the middle of the road as the map might indicate. The line is just showing the inaccuracy of GPS.

And since this is ST, be sure to ridicule my low power output.

Interesting- glad to hear you will be OK!

God, we are geeks! Only on ST would such data be so fascinating - thanks for posting it!

I hope you heal quickly and they catch the bugger that hit you.

Can you tell me what software this is for the 705?

Thank you,
Jay

  1. guilty of studying the same sort of things with my data. I had a really close call earlier this summer when someone opened a passager door in traffic, just I was coming down the hill (in the bike “shoulder/lane”). The FIRST thing I did when I got home was to dl the data and check how my HR had spiked!

  2. Interesting that your power spiked when you got hit also. You probably slammed on the pedals or something.

Oupss… should of started by saying that I am glad your are okay  But this is ST after all!

Can you tell me what software this is for the 705?

The first screenshot with the bar graphs is from WKO+. The map is just Google Earth, zoomed in really far.

Glad to hear that you are (relatively) okay. Did the witness grab the license plate number? Hopefully the dbag didn’t get away

While the accident is awful and sucks, that’s kind of cool about the data (only said knowing you will basically turn out ok). Question: Could you use the map and data in court I wonder to go after the driver had you not had the witnesses etc?? Although they might argue the map shows you riding on the middle of the road like you mentioned.

Joey, you nerd. Gee, I wonder if you’re an engineer by trade?

Seriously, we are “Xtremely” glad to hear you doing better.

See you at the races…

Ron

Classic… only on ST! Cheers man, glad the incident didn’t damage your sense of humor.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Unfortunatly the police never found the truck, and it seems pretty unlikely that they will at this point.

I also forgot to mention how my bike turned out (while I was laying in the ditch barely able to move, I was actually asking the people helping me how my bike looked). It came through pretty well. My seat got severly bent and the rear skewer was sheared off, but that’s it. I guess I took the brunt of the force and saved my bike

You know what they say right?

**“Skin, flesh and bones heal, carbon doesn’t.” **

Good luck on your recovery

One of the best posts I’ve seen in a while! Very glad you and the bike are ok. You need to make a poster or something out of that screen shot, it’s pretty classic!
