Hi
For those of you who have an interest in Triathlon History (particularly in Australia) I have just written a new book titled Multisport Dreaming: The Foundations of Triathlon in Australia.
Over the past 3 years I have interviewed close to 300 legends of the sport collected many scrapbooks / old magazines to help piece the story together. I am proud of the end result. Over 300 pages, over 300 images including many from the Photo Ninja himself - Delly Carr. Forewords written by Greg Welch, Jackie Fairweather (Gallagher) and Craig Alexander. All of whom have supported and encouraged me through the process. I even have a back page blurb written by Scott Tinley.
Although the book covers the foundations of the sport in Australia, it still has an draws on the international influence of the sport, and examines the foundation of the ITU, the process to get Triathlon into the Olympics, Australia’s success on the international stage and the appearance of the big 4 in Australia in the early years (yes, I even interviewed Scott Tinley, Dave Scott and Mark Allen). It looks at the Chaos of the 80’s, the rise of the governing bodies, the success and heyday of the 90’s, the rise of long course racing and our success in Hawaii and delves into the grass roots of the sport - the age groupers and the impact of Triathlon on the community.
There is an independent review of the book available here: http://www.transitions.org.au/showarticle.php?cid=34&p=3
An interview conducted by the IMTalk guys with myself here (My interview starts 41 minutes into the podcast): http://www.imtalk.me/home/2014/6/30/imtalk-episode-420-dr-jane-hunt.html
And a brief review by Scott Tinley here: http://www.trihistory.com/notebook/chronicling-countrys-past
The book has been written to academic standards, with all quotes fully referenced in footnotes and a detailed bibliography. But I have also ensured it is accessible to everyone, with plenty of images throughout the book to support the story, ‘At a Glance’ boxes for those who like quick facts, and a hard cover coffee table book look. I have even referred to slow twitch forums and a few articles / posts by Dan Empfield in the book in a few places.
