I’m pretty sure they did wave starts while still under the ironman banner. That was not the reason they split up. Canada also had waves to so they could have 3000 for their anniversary awhile back i believe.

I believe you are in error. IM has never approved wave starts until Kona let the elites go first. Media loves the mass start and in 200? Roth was the first to press the safety and quality of race issue. WTC didn’t budge and then upped the ante and created IM Germany and scheduuled it one week after Roth. Quelle Challenge has gone on their own ever since.

The timeline went like this:
IM Kona: 1976
IM NZ: 1982
IM Canada: 1983
The first Ironman was in 1978 and it wasn’t in Kona, it was on Oahu.
I also remember an early iron-distance race in Austin, Minnesota in the mid-80’s - perhaps 1984? It was held just one year.

IMCA required permission for riding through Camp Pendleton and I could be wrong but I thought there were issues getting permission to continue running the full 140.6 (two laps through the marine corps base) and it was instead shortened to a 70.3. RIP Perry Rendina and Carpe Diem!

Also a little incident took place after the 2001 event called 9/11. The Marine Commandant didn’t want to commit to tying up the base for a full IM. They compromised with a 1/2.
Ironman Canada began in 1986. The previous years it was NOT Ironman brand. It was the Canadian Ultra Triathlon.(or something like that.)
If I remember right, Kim Bushong won the Ricoh Ironman. The course was a little shorter than our standard lengths, but was plenty tough. I watched the pro struggling up the climb on Protero Grade. Ended on Santa Monica Pier. Great race, but almost impossible to put on.
Who won the Centurion (ironman distance) tri? I remember Jeff Tinley was in that race and I thought you raced it too? I had signed up, but came down with a flu the night before. That race was almost impossible to put on too. Redondo Beach Palos Verde pennisula—quite expensive.
Kim did lead the race on the bike and some of the run, but i believe he ended up 5th. I really think it was kurt madden who won, but definately not Kim.
And the Centurion triathlon was a bit of a cluster F&&%. I was leading through the swim and had a huge lead going into the run, something like 20+ minutes. I started the run pretty easy because of that buffer, but when i got to about mile 10 or so, i was told that runners were just minutes back. I panicked and increased the pace a lot, and on one of the steep downhills i double quad locked. Had to walk run after that, and after a few guys passed me, i pulled the plug. Come to find out after the race that everyone except me skipped a last little loop on the bike, which was about 15+ minutes. What should have been a pretty easy cruise turned into a night mare for me. And since everyone cut the course, they went ahead and let the results stand for everyone. Don’t remember who won, but definately not Jeff Tinley. Someone you probably have never heard of, or have since, and i have blocked most of that day from my mind…)-; Just one of many course snafoos that i endured over my career.

The Ricoh ironman ??? Skid won it - I think he beat Ferdy and then maybe Kurt Madden or Dean Harper . There’s a great photo of Skid running down the middle of Wiltshire

When I did Roth in 2009 the word was they left the Ironman brand because of the monetary demands. Quelle agreed to stay with the Roth event regardless of Ironman involvement.
Regarding wave starts, it sounds like there were waves in 1993 when it was an Ironman branded event.

When I was in Roth in 1991 there were ca 1400 triathletes split between two starts. If i remember correctly there was a gap of 30 minutes before the 2nd wave.

As i said, i watched the race a couple time in the early 90’s, and i distinctly remember wave starts even back then. I got to be in the lead press car which was fun as i was watching a lot of my german training buddies. Where are you getting your information?

I think you are right, forgot that Molina did the race that year. When i get back to the camp next week i will take a look at some of my old mags from 83’, i think they have results of all these races we are talking about in them somewhere. And i will ask Kim what he remembers of that race.
