Historic Kingston Triathlon, Now Part of Recharge With Milk Series

It’s worth mentioning that the historic Kingston Triathlon, in Kingston Ontario, is now part of the ReCharge with Milk Triathlon series.

Often referred K-Town Tri, this is one of the oldest races in Canada, and North America - going on now for over 30 years. I hosted the press-conference, last fall when the news was announced about, Multisport Canada taking over ownership of this iconic event. They had all kinds of pictures from the earlier days in the '80’s (I raced this race myself a number of times back then), and I was impressed by the level of sophistication and the size of the event even back at that time. At a point back then, it may have been the biggest race in Canada and one of the bigger ones in North America!

Race date - August 3rd

The race is still contested over the original distances of 2K/55K/15K - which I have always thought was a great distance to race at - not short, and not overly long. Challenging for the first-timer, but something the vets, can sink their teeth into as well. The race has some great history, with a great range of winners, including the likes of home-town boy, and double Olympic medalist, Simon Whitfield!

I’m looking forward to returning to Kingston this year to take care of the Race Announcing duties.

Steve, that was my first tri in 1985!

Yeah, I like these distances too. Its a fair test of all three disciplines and -especially given the quality of the field - you aren’t winning the OV or earning a high AG placing in K-Town unless you are very proficient at all three

.

Dev,

Epic!

We are hoping that you’ll be leading and bringing down the traditionally big crowd from Ottawa.

And please, (not directed at you, Dev) no going on and on, about how I have this race coming up and I have this specific workout I have to do that weekend - rubbish! Get out. Be part of the history of the sport. Race. Learn. Win. Fail. Experience it. Live it!

Great distance, same as the old Muskoka Chase the last of which was my second tri ever.

Rod,

So we will be seeing you in Kingston then, on Aug 3rd?

There is usually a huge crew from Ottawa there. I have done K-Town 11 times, but in recent years have been unable to make it. This year it is in between two full distance Ironmans that I am signed up to do 3 weeks apart, and I might have to do a biz trip to Asia in between so chances of being there are fairly slim. One of these years I will get back down there. As an FYI, after I did the 1985 race, I started the triathlon team at RMC. I convinced our general that the sport was awesome for servicemen and that we needed a budget and varsity status which I managed to get. Triathlon has been a big part of the Armed Forces since that time, and it was thanks to the people putting on that race in the early days that we were influenced to make it happen in the service.

Unfortunately not this year, we have family visiting that weekend

Dev,

As you know there have always been strong connections with the military and the sport of triathlon - right from it’s very roots. I recall back from my days of racing at the K-Town event in the late 80’s that, a number of servicemen & women were racing, as well there was always great volunteer support from the base in Kingston which is right there and RMC.

Indeed, two of Canada’s best women triathletes of all time - Sharon Donnelly (ITU racing) and Lynn Bermel(long course & Ironman), were in the military and went to RMC, as I seem to recall.

Please talk it up in Ottawa - It would be great to see that big crowd from the nations capitol down there racing that weekend.
