Hip pain and the hop test

I’ve had a pain in my hip joint that has been worsening over the last couple of weeks. The best way I can describe the location is that it feels like it’s in the joint itself, sort of way down in the groin on the inside. There is no focal point pain that I can find. I’ve been favoring it slightly when I walk but have been able to run without much pain, it’s just been a constant ache.

I did an 18 mile run yesterday and when I got done the pain was pretty bad. Twenty-four hours later and hopping on one leg is out of the question due to the pain. Even standing on one leg and sort of bouncing my weight up and down without actually leaving the ground is excruciating.

I’m completely unfamiliar with hip injuries. Other than femoral sfx what else could this be? I’ve searched the forum and haven’t found talk of much else.

My doc is a good sports doc who treats runners and I’m going to see him ASAP tomorrow, just wondering (and dreading) what this could be.

I’m not heartened by the sense that this has come on so quickly that in two weeks you’re to the point that you cannot even bear weight on it without pain, even though you got through an 18 mile run.

Still, a new injury like this “out of the blue” is almost certainly some kind of overuse injury or something that needs to be addressed with physical therapy or whatever; it’s not a trauma. That means, I’m sure, that whether this puts you on low miles or no miles, you’ll beat it eventually.

Sounds similar to what I have. My surgeon told me it was a pulled or strained gracilis. Basically a groin pull. It probably doesn’t hurt when you run but anything requiring you to balance you legs or hips, like a pushup, or a plank, maybe even freestyle swimming bothers it. Also might hurt doing a breast stroke kick. My pain is upper thigh, close to the groin but deep inside the meaty part of the thigh. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesn’t. First thing the doc did was rule out a hernia. Prognosis is that there isn’t anything you can do but try not to aggrevate it (like overstretching, sprinting, lateral movements), and ice. I’ve heard it could be 2 weeks, to as long as 6 months recovery time.

Google “osteitis pubis”, look on wiki and you can scare yourself with that. They are different but sound different. One is career ending, the other season ending.

Hope this helps you if not steer you in a direction. I think an MRI might reveal more and give you a better idea.

I’ve had 3 sfx’s in my femoral neck. I’ve also had bursitis and really tight psoas muscles. They all kind of feel the same. Add to the list that labral tears also present the same symptoms, and… it’s too hard to guess.

So, go see an orthopedic. He’ll probably do xrays first and then send you for an MRI. MRI’s are the only definitive way to diagnose the things that I mentioned above; they will not show up on an xray.

A few years ago my wife had a stress fracture of the femoral neck. She described it just as you have. That said lots of hip problem show themselves this way, but I would not mess around with this. I would stop running until you are able to rule out a stress fracture.

I had the exact same thing last summer. I could not stand on one leg after a run. Same area of pain and feeling. I had x-rays and an mri, they both showed nothing. I wound up missing the whole season. I biked and swam, but I think the biking may have made it worse. I got myself back up to about 90 min runs ,and now it is back. Very frustrating!!! Looking for a new doc. I hope you have better luck than i did.
