Hip pain (4)

i am training for my first ironman, after 2 seasons with 2 half ironmans and multiple sprints. i have been slowly building mileage with a coach. however, i have developed left lateral(outside) hip pain that seems to be worse with long runs. it is a little to front of center as well. i stretch a lot and am pretty flexible, try to run on softer surfaces and have been very slow to build mileage? is this likely itb tendinits/bursitis? will cycling hurt it? any thoughts?

Do a search for ‘hip pain’ or hip ‘bursitis’. The thread on ‘hip bursitis versus ITB’ covers it pretty well.

it is only in the hip. i have had back checked not too long ago and it was fine. doesn’t radiate down leg; just in the hip area. read the other post about lady with hip pain. sounds like that was her back with referred pain. mine is either in the tendons or bursa. i guess it doesn’t matter which. PT, rest, ice, nsaids. seeing PT tomm. thanks.

check for abductor weakness, I had a similar issue due to my hip hyperextending and inflaming the ITB and TFL.

does it go away or get worse during exercise?
can you only feel it while running or does it hurt all day?
does it get worse after resting?

have you tried a foam roller?

Sorry to hijack but maybe someone will dig this up one day with lot’s of helpful tips.

I’m pool running this week because of hip pain. I’ve been building my mileage these last few weeks and I have been slightly sore in my rt. groin/hip. Running 5 days a week , it seemed to subside so I assumed it was nothing. I did 15 mi.
long run on sunday, and I felt the normal fatigue/soreness in my hip flexors late in the run and immediately following. It
eased up after I did my stretching and I went about my day. When I hit the rack sunday night I was concerned. It was unusual soreness, a dull aching, but very uncomfortable. I had to roll over to position my leg so I could sleep. It was only a slight dull ache on monday and I decided to stay off the roads/trails and water run. By tuesday it is pain free and I am going to continue to water run till next week. (Ques. is one week of water running sufficient rest since it is not causing pain?) (Ques. If it hurts after a few short runs next week should I get an MRI? I’m freaked about stress frac. here)

PS: Nothing out of ordinary pain wise during sunday run on rolling dirt trail. Only that night several hours after run did it hurt the most. Psoas,Quads,Hams all have good flexibility.
