Need help! I am a pretty competitive runner/triathelete and I am having bad hip pain when I try to run. No pain biking or swimming, even with intervals. It has been almost a month of no running, I try every week or so, can’t go more than 6 minutes. It starts out like a bad bursitis pain, swollen, after a few minutes of running it shoots over to the whole hip socket, then goes numb, and it gets so painful for the next 24 hrs I can’t even sleep. Hurts to touch or even walk. I tried ice, Alleeve, rest, ART for 4 treatments, and I think that made it worse!!! Anyone have a similar experience? I would like to save some of this season ![]()
Stress fracture? Have you had any X-rays?
Jodi
Go see a doctor.
I agree with 10-4. You should see a doctor. In 1999, had something that sounds like what you described, and it turned out to be a muscle imbalance in my legs. After six weeks of physical therapy, I was able to walk without pain again.
Another thought: Do you have a toddler at home? If you’re carrying a toddler (or other heavy load) on your hip, it can cause pain in the opposite hip. I had this happen, and the pain only appeared when I tried to run.
I agree with Jodi and everyone else. Go see a doctor. Could be a possible stress fracture. In the meantime, do not run!
Thanks all for the info! I am off to the Dr. today actually, I will let you know how it goes. I don’t have a toddler, but a very fat cat I carry around? Maybe that is it.
Good luck. Be sure to feed the cat before you go.

fat cats can be a real liability! (just kidding)
let us know what the doc says; make sure you emphasize you want the best PT available!!!
It’s odd, but I’m going through the very same type symptoms now. Feels like a hip joint is injured? I saw my chiro yesterday, and I rode last night and feel much better today. He feels we do so much repetitive stuff, and works very painfully on the muscle fascia with what is called Graston technique. It’s incredibly effective, as this is the second major issue that he’s helped, when the medical community was worthless. Good luck, but I’d try to find soemone who does this, and also work on your sciatic with a TP massage ball, as it is probably a referred pain.
OK< I finally got the results of the MRI, the Dr. said it is fluid on the hip, and bursitis? I have not run for 2months, tried last week, and it is not any better. The pain comes on so suddenly, like a shot, and then hangs around for 2-3 days. Not happy with the report, I think I may try massage now. ART, did not help at all. I have still been biking and swimming a lot, not sure if it is helping or hurting, but you know how it goes, gotta do something!!! Thanks for all the input.
Hey, good luck. I know what you’ve been going thru, having done the same for 2 years. I’ll tell you, if you can find it, Graston’s the magic! And, best of all, even much cheaper than any alternative I’ve found. Just don’t give up!
How many times did you get the ART??? usually it takes 5 or 6 times to really loosen things up.
I had it 4 times within 2weeks, I honestly think it was making it worse. A PT even told me that if it was bursitis, that ARTcan inflame it more… who knows.
Get the book “Pain Free” by Pete Egoscue and give it a try. I had something wrong in my glute/hip around October but luckily it just hurt all the time except for when I was running or cycling (I know, weird). But there is a female on here that recommends Pain Free all the time so I got it. They have exercises for the whole body and different parts of the body. So I read it, looked at the exercises and thought, what a bunch of crap. But, I had bought the book so I gave it a try. Even the Spousal Unit who was spectating thought the exercises were worthless plus, how in the hell are you supposed to drink beer when you are flat on your back with your legs over a chair for 30 minutes ? But, I digress. Historically, the pain was really bad getting out of bed. The next morning it was about 70% gone and totally gone within 2 weeks. Will this work for you? I have no idea, but how wrong can you be for $10.88. Good luck.

Hmmm, that sucks, I have had ART save me many times when I have tried everything else, but ive never had bursitis in the hip. Did the PT give you stretches or excersises to help? are you taking any suppliments? What shoes are you in? have you switched recently (or recently before the injury started?)
Oddly enough, I have that book. I got it from a friend a year ago for something else, I have to give it a shot. Since I have all the down time what do I ahve to loose. I’m sure I can get a straw for the beer…
have you tried a foam roller? Also; your OP said the hip went numb after running, do you mean that the pain went away? I had hip bursitis that would hurt like hell except after 20 minutes of running. Then it was fine until the ITB tightened in a few hours, bursitis would flare up again painful to walk, sleep…
The first couple times using the foam roller I thought something was seriously wrong, sharp pain in my hip as I rolled it - but in 10 days or so it went away. I still have to roll it; I was on vacation last week and forgot my roller, I could feel the start of some pain/stiffness in my hip after 3 days of running and not rolling. I ended up using a rolling pin until I got home again.
