Hip or Hip Flexor Problem...You make the call!

I’m looking for some feedback from Slowtwitchers…I have a hip problem, but I’m not clear if it’s a hip flexor or hip joint issue.

Towards the end of this past season, each run would end with some hip discomfort on my right side. Post run, I always stretch for about 10 minutes. Quads, hip flexors, hammies, calves and achilles. The discomfort, in most cases, will persist for 24 hours or more. I made the decision about 4 weeks ago to stop running altogether to see if rest was the answer.

Over the course of these past 4 weeks, I’ve continued to stretch and spin. I’ve also added some weight training to strengthen my quads and lower back. I’ve been taking 800mg of Ibuprofen when I wake up, and when I go to bed at night - assuming it’s inflammation that’s causing the discomfort.

When standing, I lift my right knee towards my chest and I can hear a clicking sound that is not present when I repeat this with my left leg. The clicking I hear and feel is in very close proximity to my discomfort. Has anyone experienced this same issue? I’m at the point where I may go see a doctor as rest, stretching and meds don’t seem to be working. (resting level of discomfort is only slightly less than post run)

Could this be a hip joint problem, or a hip flexor problem? I would appreciate any and all thoughts on the subject…

Need more info… where exactly do you feel pain? Is it lifting your knee that is hard/painful? Does anything make the pain go away?

When the pain is present, it’s there for all aspects…sitting, standing, walking. The raising of my knee and hearing the clicking sound is simply an observation of something going on in that area. For instance, today is a good day with no discomfort. If I raise my knee to my chest, the clicking still occurs, but does not cause any discomfort.

One other observation: First thing in the morning, I’ll stand to shave and get the sense I’m leaning to my left because there is more pressure being applied to the floor with my right leg than my left.

Perhaps I should stay at a Holiday Inn Express so this all becomes clear to me…
