okay so i was looking through the pics from the tour of flanders and saw two pics of Hincapie one early in the race and the other with a caption reading that he was in the last kilo. The thing is in the first pic he’s wearing shoe covers and the second he isnt. Seems weird. i would think that he’d have to stop to take them off----anyone ever taken off shoe covers midrace?
Yes, taking off shoe covers is slightly more more difficult than removing knee/leg warmers during the course of a race but is still not that hard - this assumes that the tempo of the race and the course terrain is conducive at the time. Now one asset available to Hincapie that us mere mortals and triathletes dont have is the ability to drop back to the team car so that one of the support guys pulls it off for you while he hangs onto the car for 10-12 seconds or so!
Side note: I had a small pebble in my shoe during yesterdays training ride. to resolve this I simply slipped to the back of the group during a lull, removed my foot from the shoe while leaving the shoe clipped in. Once my foot was removed from the shoe, it rotated downward and out came the pebble. I guess in tri-terms it was sort of like a rolling transistion (T1.5)!
Magic would have been if he won. I was actually very suprised that he attacked like he did with 40-50km to go. Maybe if he races a little more offensively like that he might win a classic one day (sorry, but GW does not count).
None of the big guys attacked. That’s why the race turned out like it did. They all sat on their thumbs watching each other and let Wesseman and a few others sneak away.
I am glad to see Wesseman win though considering the rotten luck he has had in the spring the last couple years.
