I’m not a big Letterman fan, but in this series he’s hilarious in response to a dazed, stoned, weird, bogus, etc Phoenix.
Don’t fall for this. Its all a bit that this guy is pulling on everybody. Eventually there will be some sort of docu-drama associated with this whole hoax.
Although Dave did have several very good one-liners!
It was funny. Phoenix is lucid- he smiles quickly, and strives to hide it a few times. I wonder what the gag is supposed to be?
Maybe I just don’t understand celebrity humor, because staged or real, it’s dumb.
Before I saw the clip, I knew that a hoax was a possibility b/c of something I read.
2 best lines …
After Phoenix states that he’s been working on his hip hop music, Letterman replies “I find that unlikely” (A case could be made that Joaquin is trying tnot to laugh/smile at the comment).
“Joaquin, I am sorry you could not be with us tonight”. Phoenix finds this humorous and plays it down with just a smile.
Both comments were pdfunny.
Doesn’t he have a movie coming out soon? If so, I’d guess that this whole charade was to drum up some buzz - and it worked!!!
Does he play a schizophrenic in the movie? The guy seems seriously off.

Right you are.
Joaquin Phoenix unveils ‘Lost Year’
After being missing in action from movie theaters since announcing his retirement in 2008, Joaquin Phoenix is about to come back in a very big way.
“I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix,” directed by the star’s brother-in-law Casey Affleck, 34, will arrive in theaters September 10.
Hopefully we’ll get to find out exactly what went down during the time Phoenix quit acting to pursue a career as a rap star. Because that awkward Letterman appearance, in which the 35-year-old gave the talk-show host the silent treatment? Apparently, that was just the tip of the craziness iceberg.
The documentary reportedly shows Phoenix snorting cocaine off the breast of a prostitute, and, according to the L.A. Times, includes “more male frontal nudity than you’d find in some gay porn films.”
Eamonn Bowles, president of the films distributor, Magnolia Pictures, told Deadline.com “I’m Still Here” is a “pretty amazing piece of work, jaw dropping but dimensional.”
As to whether any of the debauchery is real, Bowles will only say, “Frankly, some of the behavior is very extreme. But it is in the context of the insanity of being in Joaquin’s life for that period of time. It is a unique piece of work that is going to surprise people in different ways.”

Sounds like a…uhh…winner.
That movie isn’t so crazy if the one thing they pick to talk about is snorting coke off of a hooker’s breast. I mean, hasn’t just about everyone done that?
