Hiking as cross-training? 3 questions

i’ve been doing alot of hiking lately, shortest hike being 2 hours. these hikes have hills and move at a pretty good clip.

my husband and i are planning to go on a weekend hiking trip for the weekend after Thanksgiving, as well as a full week of backpacking during December. the weekend trip will have some hills, but the full week will be strenuous (and most likely will be in North Carolina). Then i plan to get back to a tri program at the end of December.

so, my questions are:

-am i trashing my tri training by focusing on hiking for 6 weeks? (i’m nervous that i’ll come back totally out of running shape, etc. but i’m not sure, given that i did a half mary Oct. 15th.)

-is hiking a good way to burn fat, even though it’s obviously slower than running and non-impact? (i’ve noticed my clothes are looser. i’m too nervous to weigh myself, but new jeans that i just bought can be taken off without even unbuttoning or unzipping them. it was not like that in the store when i bought them)

-will the hiking give me any carry over benefit to tri training?

thanks,

kitty

Hike all you want my dear, When is your next race, May? Enjoy the outdoors, and the time with your husband. Then hit training hard in Feb.

well, i’ll tell you, i love it. it’s been so awesome, and i can take my dogs for hikes under 5 miles. they love it, and being in the forest is so good for me. it really feels like “getting away”, which is something i don’t have enough of (given that my office and business are ran out of my house!)

i just don’t want to come back to S/B/R and be totally trashed, complete with suffocating lungs, etc. maybe i should sneak in some runs…

hey, didn’t you race a 5K today?

Training is not just about your lungs and legs, it’s about your heart and soul and spirit.

Hiking is decent for the former group, and amazing for the latter.

Don’t think yer getting a good enuff workout? Carry a heavier pack. Or go faster. Or both.

Not that you should worry about that sorta thing in Novemeber anyway…

5k? Who did Mr Clark get smacked down by today?

well, i can tell you it’s hard to keep up with my husband. he is about 6’2, and has long strides. also, he is a very good outdoorsman. with me at 5’4, i’m hustling to keep his speed. however, i’m climbing better than i have before (yay!!)

that is a good idea about a heavier pack. for the NC trip, i’ll probably wish i had no pack at all, lol!

Erik didn’t race the Beath Michigan 5K today. Newbz and I are having a “virtual smackdown”. I did my 5K this am and he should be doing his within the hour. We will post our times

Good to see 'ya last night Kitty! I can’t believe that you didn’t partake in anything with the liquor cabinet! Did you have any of the sushi I brought? Fun by all. Missed you at the 5K!

oh, Larry found out that i love gin (but besides not drinking, Evan marked it off limits because it makes me swing from the chadeliers), and he was trying to twist my arm into drinking some. it was hilarious! that liquor cabinet was something to behold, wasn’t it.

but, i didn’t see the sushi! rats! i love the stuff. i eyeballed that table of food for a whole hour, i swear. it all looked so good.

sent you an email, i felt so guilty for over sleeping that i ran my own 5K here, it’s my “home course” that i’ve had mapped out forever. man, i ran it in under 27 minutes, and was happy with that, seeing how i haven’t really ran since the 1/2 mary Oct. 15!

way to go on your run this morning. you’re winning everything these days!

hiking with dogs is not hiking. I take it all back.

shorter hikes (like 5 miles or less). it’s still hard!

don’t take it back. you’re messing with my head!

lol…
