HFP's New Mohican Triathlon

I’m very psyched to sign up for HFP’s new triathlon at Mohican State Park in Ohio. Anyone have any idea what the bike and run will be like? I think there was another triathlon down there in the early 2000s. The park is spectacular. Is the bike a beast like - say - Portage Lakes? And what about the run? It sounds like it might be extremely challenging as well.

Is it off-road?

The tri that HFP put on in the early 2000’s was the Pineman. It was a very difficult course, and was a full iron distance race. I’ve done the P Lakes course many times and it does not come close to the original Pineman as far as degree of difficulty. Ditto for the run. Not sure the distance of this new race nor the course but there isn’t a whole lot of flat land down there. Knowing Shannon this will be tough. They also race the Mohican 100/100 metric MTB race every June and it draws people from all over. My daughter and I camp at the host campground every year with our Indian Princesses spring campout while the Mohican 100 is taking place and it is quite the sight. The fact that Great Lakes Brewery is a sponsor of the Mohican 100 and they have a beer truck for post race frosties is really sweet! So if this new race is to be of the XTERRA genre, it should be interesting and difficult

I am pretty sure it is not off road. I got an email about it a while back and it looked like typical hfp race distances with max being half iron. I think they also said was very limited on number of entrants.

Pineman was my first 1/2. I had no idea what the course was like, just signed up because of the date. It was 2000, freezing cold at the start. Gels frozen on the bike, swim much warmer than the air. Crazy hard bike bike for a newbie. I don’t remember much about the run. I’m really glad I didn’t switch to the full in my ignorance. If I was close enough, I’d be signing up for this race in a minute. Great memories of sitting in the host hotel eating a steak dinner watching the finishers come in.(could only see the lights of the finish area and flashes from race photographers going off.

About to pull the trigger on registering for the half right now. The bike looks to be on paved roads, but it looks like the run is on the Pleasant Hill Lake Trail. Does anybody have any idea if this is a paved trail the entire way or not? hard to tell by the satellite picture of the run course. Website says the event cap is 500 participants, and thats between a mini, sprint, olympic, and half. Looks like it’s gonna be a small field! P.S. HFP is offering 25% off registration using discount code HFPSUPERSALE2014 if you sign up before Jan 15. Thats a pretty damn good price for a half!

The HIM run will be on pavement for the first 2+ miles, then will be on trail the rest of the way except for a half-mile or so through a campground along the river. The Pleasant Hill Trail is flat, but it becomes single track with lots of roots and rocks east of the campground along the river. The last 3 miles will be largely uphill, including up the side of the Pleasant Hill dam.

The HIM bike course is not that hilly for the Mohican region as both Pleasant Valley Road and Possum Run Road are valley roads, but there are several short climbs on the loop as least as difficult as Sept’s Portage Lakes course.

I signed up on Jan. 1. I’ll be doing the sprint. Love the Mohican Country. See you there!

Ill be signing up but I cant decide which distance half or olympic, it would be my first half distance and im mainly focusing on olympic distances this year. I cant pass it up though I ride those roads all the time. some of my favorite routes go through and around mohican. looking forward to it hopefully see a lot of people there.

Mohican would be an epic place for an xterra. If they make an xterra I will be the first to sign up.

I am very torn. I am actually already reserved to be camping starting the 22nd so I will be right there. I was already bringing my bike and going to train that week, the half sounds like fun. But damn it is hilly.

Well you know you probably won’t regret doing it but if you don’t and your there anyway you probably will…so just go for it
.

Well I signed up for the half distance…what are your thoughts on bike to use will you be using your road or tri bike. I plan on riding the course with both to see…just wondering others thoughts.

My husband and I are both signed up for the half duathlon. We ran the marathon distance last year when the Mohican 100 was going on, and it’s just too beautiful of an area to not race in. It just makes me slightly sad that we won’t be doing the trail marathon this year due to it being the day before the tri/du.

While the people at HFP are very nice, i raced with them last year in Morgantown, and it was by far, the most disorganized, screwed up race i have ever participated in. If it could have went wrong, it did. While not every ting was their fault, when issues arose, such as a very strong current, it was handled about as poorly as possible. .

Again, i think they’re great people, but i would never spend the money to race with them again.

Just my .02 in case you haven’t raced with them before.

As of now I’m planning to ride the TT bike, but when the weather warms up I plan to go ride the course a few times as well, before I make my final decision.

I have raced with them before and never had a problem…I’m sure you’ll have issues with most groups at some point though. Anyways I’m looking forward to it I ride the roads and run the area quite a bit so being familiar with the area and course will hopefully help a lot if there are some issues.

If anybody comes to check the course out and would like someone to ride with let me know

I have done a number of races with them in the last couple of years and they have all been well done with zero issues. Certainly not flashy but that is exactly why I like their races

Thought I would throw this out there if anyone is traveling a distance for the race and needs a place to stay may want to check this out. Its about 15 miles away from mohican lodge in Bellville Ohio. Offers breakfast and has dinner Thurs-Sat. Recently opened very nice place.
Heres their website

I’m considering doing the half and it looks like the course is a 3 loop course on trail (per the course description). Do you know if this is different from last year? And what kind of trail (single track or multi-use and how hilly)?

Different location than last year. Pleasant Hill. I haven’t been in the park in a long time but from what I remember the trails are cut through woods and fields and should definitely be rolling but not nearly as technical as most of the trails in Mohican State Park and nothing as long and steep as the dam hill. Still, I’d expect a pretty tough run by Ohio standards.
