Hey, (some of) you guys really do know what you're talking about

I’m a terrible swimmer, albeit I’m 4 weeks into learning this silly sport. I’m in the 1:55 to 2:05 range and working to get better. Thanks to your tips, I had 2 major break thru’s this morning!

  1. I swam 1,100 yds of my 2,000 continuously. I was previously only able to do 600. Something just clicked today.
  2. I actually felt what I think you fish call “the catch”. When my arms were directly under my, with elbows slightly bent, I could feel all this pressure from the water as I pushed back. Again, something just clicked. Might have been my concentration on completing full strokes.

The biggest tip you guy have helped me with is “swim more”. I’ve been in the pool 3 - 4 times per week for 2 weeks and it’s paid huge dividends.

Thanks again, I owe you guys!

since nobody else has taken the credit for this yet: THANKS glad I could help!

next you’ll start feeling the kick…

when someone “says” 1:55 to 2:05 range, what does that mean? (this is where I am on my swimming)

You need to redefine terrible - try 2:30 - 2:40.

I know as I define terrible.

Fixed it for you - remember this is ST.

next you’ll start feeling the kick…

after starting swimming roughly 17years ago… i’m still waiting for this to happen.

They are referring to the time it takes them to swim 100 yds/mtrs…

still remember that day… all of a sudden I could feel the water moving across the top of my feet. We were doing 100 yd kick intervals and just dropped 15 seconds off the swim time. I think having an extra 15 seconds of rest is what I remember most : )

what is this “kick set” you speak of???

I think it was 100s on a 2:30 interval… it was 1970 and I was alternating between dolphin, flutter, and whip (breaststroke)

You know the feeling finman gets when he puts n his flippers :0)
.

I think I don’t like you.

Congrats. With that kind of committment, you should be down to the 1:30 pace soon.

For those of us that DID NOT swim directly out of the uterus, kicking, as propulsion, is the last thing we figure out.

The big thing to learn over the next few months is how to have a powerful stroke without thrashing about in the water. The word “smooth” is the best way to think of how swimming should be. It should not look like a great white attacking a baby seal. More like a monkey swinging from vine to vine through the rain forest in some mythical disney movie.

Learn to use your body to rotate. Think of a baseball pitcher and how the wind-up is started with the leg, then hip, then shoulder then finally the arm, like a large rubberband being stretched out. And then the release and follow through with the same body parts. All this while holding a straight line and driving forward with momentum. Without looking like a snake in the water.

Work in some other strokes too, like breast stroke for 100 yards. Throw fins on and do back stroke for 100 yards. Screw butterfly, no sane person should ever do butterfly…ever.

Damn… what is this “like” thing but I do know that sanity was never a question.

I think it was highly insensitive of you to talk “easily” of kick sets when I am kick-challenged. Look around the room before you talk so candidly next time, you could hurt my feelings.

Honestly, I have no sense of timing or rhythm. Sometimes it appears I am going backwards when I do kick sets.
