Hey kids! Let's start an MDOT rumor

So I’m riding along one of my usual routes yesterday - it’s a road near my house that I’ve ridden a billion times - as I approach an intersection I glance down and was surprised to see an official-looking, MDOT logo painted on the road. Humm… that’s wierd. So I keep riding and I see more of them - several, in fact, at each intersection. Then I notice that although there are no arrows, they seem to be identifying a course by way of their orientation. Turned counterclockwise 90 degrees (so the dot is to the left) means turn left. Clockwise 90 degrees means turn right. I didn’t follow the whole route (maybe this weekend) but they do pass close to a large, navagable body of water complete with parking lots and boat ramps.

At one point I actually stopped and took a closer look at one of the logos. They’re obviously fresh, but they’re painted with grey paint and lightly “dusted” on the road. They almost look like someone specifically DIDN’T want them to be noticed.

So, is WTC scouting a potential new course in central Ohio?
Can Ironman Ohio be far behind?
Is someone planning a bandit race and playing fast and loose with their logos?

This could be fun in a ST kind of way. Insert your own rumor below…

Edit: I’m not going to say exactly where I saw this because if someone is planning an “off the radar” event of some kind I don’t want to give away the specifics.

You know the rule. Pictures or it didn’t happen.

good job bro! This is why ST is so exciting!

Obviously they are pissed at the TOoO people are now going after them on their home turf!

I’m waiting for Ironman Papua New Guinea to be launched.

Seriously though, what is the story on Ironman China. Did they get that off the ground or will the slots go to his phanton Ironman Columbus/Dayton/Toledo?

no way. IMKY is too close.

Absolutely.
WTC would never be able to sell enough slots in a race that close by.

no way. IMKY is too close.

maybe a 70.3, but I doubt it.

Next time out, I’ll get some.

If I knew what city this was in, I could give a better opinion, having live in Central Ohio for a while…My biggest question is not what or when, but who? I don’t know of any big race organizers out in that area.

I keep waiting for CTA (Columbia Tri ASSN) to get an Im here in MD, but I doubt that’ll happen anytime soon.

I know exactly where you are talking about. That was done about 2 weeks ago. Please don’t tell me you missed the Ironman race so close to where you live??

Ha just kidding.

Do you know who did it?

NO sorry.

In my post it says just kidding. I have no idea where you are talking about.

I think it was pretty strange you saw it. I probably would have been like WTF is this.

Take a photo just for your own records incase they get washed away

That makes no sense at all that it would be WTC. They don’t need to deface the street to figure out a course.

Odds are it is either an individual or a club just marking their ride in a way to keep themselves motivated.

China didn’t get off the ground, obviously, and not sure if it will (although Hainan is meant to spectacular and I gather a LOT of effort has gone into trying to get it off the ground) but I do hear rumblings of other locations as possible sites for 70.3 distance/style races at least. Given the uptake of the Singapore event, and it will be great but perhaps not the best/most exotic race location in the region, it makes sense to think that some new races will appear on other islands out here in 2008.

I hope that some of the 101 people have that thought process going on as well.

Shannon Kurek? The guy behind the HFP and 101 series.

Here’s basically what I got from my letter.

They are looking bring Ironman to Sandusky Ohio where you have a beautiful downtown feeling for the start.

The swim starts from approx 10 of the Cedar Point ferry boats where you will be dropped into Sandusky Bay and have to swim 2.4 miles back to shore. At that time you will have to make a decision to continue the race or just swim to Cedar Point and ride the rollercoasters and east cheesey french fries. You will exit the water up the launch ramp and into Sandusky’s premire hotel “The Point”.

T1 is in the grand ball room. From there you take the elevator up to the 4th floor where you will get your bike. Exit the building from the roof top parking via the long ramp designed to get you 17.4 miles into the course before you will need to pedal.

The bike course is flat and fast with beautiful sights of the great Ohio Buckeye fields as well as a trip through the Seneca Caverns and Cedar Point Amusement park. All entry fees will be waves for participants as long as they are wearing their race number.

Back to the hotel and up the ramp where there is a escalator type belt to get you on the roof again where you will change for the run.

The run is a 4 mile 6 loop course through downtown Sandusky with a short out and back so you can keep an eye on your competition. It promises to be the best run you will ever have.

Good point, I hadn’t thought of them.

Hmmm, interesting, but then again why would you mark the course? Most course are wheel measured and with GPS and map data, an aerial and elevation level is easy to do.

One of race directors in Central Ohio (other than HFP) that just had or will have triathlons at Alum Creek this month?

LOL, early nomination for POTD!
