Hemorrhoids (1)

Okay, whose had em? What you do for them? And what type?? I seem to have won the hemorrhoid lottery and have both internal and now external. Thank God for antibiotics and their many side effects.

If you’ve read the link posted above, then you know the problem I had. Same as you, internal and external. The external just showed up one day and hurt like hell. Doc told me to see surgeon. Surgeon told me to not drink or eat after midnight cause he was going to operate the next day. That was last thursday. I’m still on pain meds but not as much and BMs aren’t quite as painful now, but…I’m not gonna lie, it hurt…a lot. The good news is it’s usually a permanent fix. I had the internal for a few years but they were never more than a nuisance. They came about when I had surgery for my back and was prescribed pain meds. But nobody told me to take a stool softener as well. Now I know better.

For the most part, they will not go away on their own for good. I’m glad I had the surgery and look forward to returning to biking and running. Recovery should be about three weeks.

When I was a fresh faced young 2LT in Infantry Officer training I remember hearing a ‘grizzled’ old (27) prior service Special Forces guy complain about his 'roids. I laughed. He looked at me and said, prophetically, ‘Just wait…this is what the Infantry does to you.’ Sho-nuff, within 3 years I had the 'roids as well.

Here I am, a grizzled old 29 and I feel the pain. They were just a pain in the ass (Hah!), but lately I’ve had to break down and buy the butt cream. I’m hoping for the best. I have no idea what ‘type’ they are, as I don’t enjoy spending too much time back there.

Internal=you can push them back in after a BM. Usually don’t hurt much.

External=like sitting on grapes. Can hurt quite a bit. Much harder to get rid of.

I am not a doctor, I am not dispensing medical advice, i have never tried the following nor do I know anyone who has. Obviously your hemorrhoids were not induced by pregnancy so this might not be relevant. Please sign the waiver releasing me from all potential lawsuits should you decide to take any action based on the following information.

Some evidence suggests that oxerutins might be helpful for hemorrhoids as well. A double-blind study enrolling 97 pregnant women found oxerutins (1,000 mg daily) significantly better than placebo in reducing the pain, bleeding, and inflammation of hemorrhoids.

here is a link for venoruton capsules which contain oxerutins (the website states it is for treatment of vericose veins but it is the same stuff from the above article).

Finally a meta-analysis of flavinoids as treatment for hemorrhoids. You might need a subscription for this article, i am not sure.

Guess I’m never eating grapes again.

Flavenoids? Really? So if I eat tons of chocolate and drink tons of wine I should be GTG? Interesting…

Before committing to surgery, I recommend exploring prescription medications: specifically, Proctofoam for internal, and Proctocream for external. I have no connection to the company that makes those drugs, but it seems like a good thing to try before going under the knife.

From the website linked by Square

Proctocream-HC Cream

Generic Name: Hydrocortisone Acetate (hye-droe-KOR-ti-sone ASS-eh-tate)

Am I the only one that sees the humor in a hemorrhoid cream having the phonetic ASS in it? Maybe I am just feeling a little juvenile today.

Funny thing is, that is exactly what the doctor prescribed for me.

I read a peer reviewed article awhile ago that showed a 1:1:1 ratio of honey, olive oil and beewax is good for treating symptoms of hemorrhoids. I cant remember what the citation is though. In all honesty I cant imagine putting that on my backside.
