Help with an old bike

Dug up an old schwinn for a buddy to try a duathlon on. We run road races together and he wanted to give it a try with a minium of expediture. Mechanically it is not bad, little brake/shifter adjustment, new tires/brakepads. It is not going to be fast and he doesn’t care he just wants to finish. Problem is I think that the hubs need to be greased or something, give the rear wheel a spin and it grinds to a halt in 4-5 revolutions. I am not a bike mechanic, but it doesn’t seem like that big of a job, where would I look for directions? or is it simple enough for one of you to talk me through online?

Thanks in advance

Jim, is it going to be one of the Michigan Du’s (Willow, Nankin, Grosse Ile)? If so, and he needs 700c, 8 or 9sp wheels, I can bring an extra pair.

You kinda need a cone wrench… but here is a nice set of instructions for older hubs. There’s a link on this page for more modern freehubs as well:

And if it’s a REALLY old Schwinn, with 126mm rear dropouts and 7-speed shimano, I have an extra pair I can loan out to a Michigander as well.

Guys, it’s a really, really old schwinn varsity 27’ wheels, it will be the Willow Duathlon. Looks like I might have to invest in some tools.
