Help! triathlon has turned me into a miserable weakling

Just got back from a week long family camp. Much to my surprise and dismay I major problems doing any of the following activities:

  • Wakeboarding (used to be pretty good at this) couldn’t hold onto the rope
  • Rock climbing
  • Lifting my children onto a horse
  • Climbing onto a water trampoline
  • Arm wrestling my 8 y/o son
  • Playing soccer, basketball or pretty much anything that does not require running in a straight line

I was also so sore by day 2 that I was shot for the rest of the week. This is the first time since I started triathlon 6-7 years ago that I found out just how one dimensional I have become and that it has affected enjoying time with my family and other activities. It looks like I will be giving up a few rides and runs for some weights(yes, maybe even some squats) and plyometrics. Anyone else have an experience like this?

LOL over Christmas we were shooting at the deer target off the roof. I could not pull the 50# draw on my friends recurve bow. I had to use his son’s with a 35# draw.
Being strong is not the same as being fast.

You have to sacrifice something. 2 years ago I could out lat-pull every guy in the gym and do 20 pull ups (actually my workout was 6 sets of 20 - then 3 sets of the entire stack on the Nautilus machine, and I’m not big at all) - now I can barely do 10. I’ve just shifted what I can beat the muscle-bound meat heads at from pull-ups to SBR. I’m actually thinking of going back to my old routine next year after training ‘long’ this year.

Just curious…how do you intend to use this soon to be aquired strength…

Opening doors really fast?

Carrying 6 Walmart plastic bags in each hand?

It’s pretty important as a guy to have muscle strength because you never know when you are going to need it.

I’m still in the gym at least 3x a week and start every day with pullups and pushups once I roll out of bed.

90% of other men out there are wimps so it’s definitely worthwhile, on the street, to have decent muscle and a little knowledge on fighting technique to quickly and effectively end any encounter that might come up.

It’s also critical as a father if you have sons. Your son needs to know - at least until he’s 18 - that his father is physically stronger than he is to ensure respect and authority in the household. It’s also helpful if you have daughters to be able to intill respect for her in any men pursuing her even beyond age 18.

Finally, if you are a man pursuing relations with women, women are drawn to men who make them feel secure - and on the deepest level that means muscle. She won’t give a damn that you can do an IM under 9 if she doesn’t think you stand a chance at defending her or her prospective if needed or if you don’t have the strength for basic household moving/lifting duties.

If you disagree with this, please keep in mind that you can save approximately 24 seconds in a 40k TT by having your genitals removed. Go for it, since apparently you don’t need them.

Is that because you are the only guy doing lat-pulls? I’ve heard guys bragging about flat bench, incline bench, deadlift, squat, jerk, and even db press, but ‘lat pull’?

Here’s a clue: pullups + weight belt + plates.

Such pearls of wisdom…thank you.

You don’t need to weightlift, you need to lift your children more!

My favorite workout is the “pivot and insert 2 year old into car seat”. Very
good for core strength, and we seem to be adding some weight each week…

Yep as someone said you can’t have it both ways.

that is why I did my first years of triathlons at 155, got tired of being so small and weak. So went back to lifting and now race at 205.

You have convinced me to go out and get a recurve bow with a 35# pull, and I’m not even sure what that is. It would seem to accomplish the same tasks as being a meathead, without all the gym time, with the added benefit that if I get hungry I can shoot deer off DD’s roof.

lol I now know why Paulo said he was done with you.

The problem with that is you may as well buy a gun because any use of it is going to result in at least a hospital visit which results in a police report which results in jail time.

Plus, there is still a semblence of chivalry out there so most encounters are hands-only and any use of weapons is frowned upon.

Besides, those deer are made of plastic.

*** Just curious…how do you intend to use this soon to be acquired strength…***

To show off to my high-school football playing kids, and their football playing jocks. They may be able to out bench me, but I can out-run them, out bike them, out swim them, and out PULL-UP them - I will own that pullup bar again!!! You’re right - I don’t have the need to lift myself up over platforms, climb walls, or do anything that requires strong back/lats. My training regimen was part of an overall routine that included pullups, pushups, situps, dips, and benchpress. I just mentioned the pullup part. I can only imagine how many pullups I could have done 2 years ago if I had weighed only 175-180 lbs. I was 205 and change.

Seriously - my reasoning is that I want to have “all-around” fitness and strength. I want to be fast (competitive in triathlon), and muscularly strong. 2 years ago I convinced myself that I can’t have both, so I stopped lifting. Now I’ve changed my mind. I also have an ulterior motive. My boys are almost in High School, and I will be faster than they are for a long time. But unless I get back into the gym, they will surpass me. So it’s an ego thing too - they may be able to out-bench me soon, but I will own one thing in that gym - the pull-up bar!!!

Here’s a clue: pullups + weight belt + plates.

Yeah - I know that and I was getting there. But my goal was also muscular endurance, not just power. So the story goes - while I’m doing 20 pullups, the meat-head next to me puts the pin all the way at the bottom of the stack to show off while I’m doing pussy-pullups (albeit 20 of them, 6 sets). So for kicks, when I was done - I went over, I put the pin all the way down - and WHAM - I could do 8. The guy left. So I added that to my workout. My goal was to get to 3x10 before I started doing anything else, but I quit before getting there. Besides - I probably would have added a rep to my pullups first (6x21) anyway.

I see a “you might be a redneck” joke coming here…

I’m afraid to even walk by a basketball court for fear of twisting or pulling something.

wow… it’s like a voice from the 50s. here! on the 'net!

Me thinks you are on the wrong site!!!

I too agree with this. I’ve lost a bunch of weight and am a lot faster for it, but at 5’8", I won’t go under 150# (maybe 147-148 for an A race; I’m 158# now). I accept that it will limit my raw speed, especially running- I want a 40 min 10k, but not much faster. I’m in the Army. If I get into PA school (find out in 6 weeks!), I intend to volunteer to go back to the Middle East with a combat unit when I’m done. I need to be strong enough to lift an injured Soldier with all of his body armor, ammo, and gear, plus my 60+ # of gear in a fight. If I have to give up overall placings, and just place in my AG to save a guy’s life, then I’m more than willing to pay the price.

Well…I was in NC

I stopped weight training in 2002 when I started training for triathlon at the age of 32. About 3 months ago I added back into my regimine and I’m feeling great, albeit weak compared to what I used to be able lift.

I think there are too many individuals out there (on ST) who bash weight training. For me, I’m 37 years old and if I go by the medical reports, I’ve been losing 1% of lean muscle for the past couple of years without strength training. I don’t need to bench press 225 anymore, but having some sort of resistance training IMO does more good in the long run then just SBR.
