so i popped a spoke head on my rear wheel while riding today. unfortunately i rode late in the day and all the shops are closed. i have a triple in the front, so i have an 8-cog cassette in back. none of my friends have 8’s in the back, only 9’s. how bad is it if i switch an 8 for a 9? would you do it? any modifications? i really wanna ride tomorrow!
Your 8 speed cassette will fit fine on a 9 speed hub/wheel.
no no–i don’t have the tools to swap out the cassettes–i mean can i put a wheel with a 9 speed cassette on my bike, which is used to and 8 back there?
Are you talking about popping in a new wheel in place of your old one? If you or your friends have the tools, you should be able to swap out your cassette with theirs and still ride your 8 cog. I’m just a home mechanic, but if you can’t do that, I would guess you could put in a wheel with a 9 cog, tune it up, and you should be ok, but you might not be able to use all 9 cogs because I think the derailleur and shifter are set to travel a certain number of times.
The 8 speed chain may be too wide for the 9 speed cassette.
If you are using bar end shifters, you can put it in friction mode and try it.
not using bar-end shifters–sti shifting system on a shimano 8sp drivetrain. i thought the spacing difference on the shimano 8/9sp was small enough to get by–won’t know until the morning. i’m just trying to make sure i won’t wreck my friends cassette in the process.
the only other option is to start going around with a spoke wrench and looseing the spokes across the hub to straighten out the wheel, but i don’t think i want to do a ride with one less spoke in there (32spoke wheel).
so do you think it will wreck my friend’s cassette? don’t have the tools to swap out cassettes–is there a home do-it-yourself version you can think/know of?
What kind of cassette do you have?
I have three bikes, two with 8 speeds wheels, shifters, chains and one with full 9 speed set up. I switch back and forth all the time with no trouble at all. I just use the shifters in friction mode (like the old days). Go for it.

I see you said you had the shimano 8spd. If you don’t have a chain whip or two and the right tool for the cap, I don’t know what else to do. I still think you will probably be ok. Just try it out and make sure you take a good look at how the chain sits on your buddy’s cassette and how it shifts. If it isn’t too tight, you should be fine. You definitely don’t want to ride a race missing a spoke.
Cant be done, 8 speed chain is too wide for 9 speed cassette! It will most likely shift all over and maybe not even grab the cogs because it wont sit low enough.

As I mentioned earlier, I had no problems at all.

You may have a 9spd chain. Most shops wouldn’t keep 8spd chains anymore, since a 9spd chain will work on an 8spd cassette no problems, so if you have changed the chain in the last 12 months that is probably what you have and why it works - otherwise you are just lucky.
I have never specifically tried to use an 8spd chain on a 9spd cassette but then I have tried enough things to know the campatibility specifications published by the manufacturers are usually correct.

Nope, 8 speed chain. Just lucky I guess.

I have 1 bike with an 8 speed setr up and 1 with a 9. I swap wheel between the two often with no probs. Only semi difficult thing is certain gears require me to change past them then back to get the chain on the cog. I have had the 1 chain on both for some 5000 ks each and no wear issues that I can see. I have 105 on 1 and Sora on the other.
