HELP...need MacGyver chain tool

Okay, need help from inventive wrenches. I am on call tonight at the hospital and because of the hurricane am probably going to get some trainer time tonight. Bike is a new one and only realized after I got it here that the chain is wayyyy too long. Bike shop is closed tomorrow and I can’t find my chain tool which means I am going to miss several good nights of potential trainer time. Soooo…

Anybody got a good way to tap out a pin without a chain tool? It is a permalink SRAM chain so hooking it back up isn’t the problem, it is removing a link. I have a hammer available but no really good thing to use as a punch, other than a ball point pen. Being that it is a hospital however with probably some crap lying around, I am going to start scrounging around. Anyone have any good suggestions?

I could just put it in a big gear and hammer, but I really need to do some aerobic slow type endurance stuff right now.

Thanks,

Lance

You can use a thin nail, even filing off the point at the end and a light hammer. I’ve done it, but the proper tool is a heck of a lot lot easier.

Thanks, for the reply. Caught a break at work and ran home to find a nail and my dremel…and in the process found the damned chain tool, so I am good to go. Go figure. Been looking for the damned thing for 2 days now.
