Help me pick a new running shoe

I have been using Asics DS Trainers for about 3 years now and have had no problems, however, I am currently doing a run focus period now durning the off-season and increasing the number of runs per week slowly and mileage, and feel like I need a more cushioned shoe for the longer runs what shoe should I try the 2100 or the Gel Kayano or any other suggestions, I have narrow feet with low arches…I recall reading somewhere that you should use a shoe with more support/cushion as you are ramping up the miles etc, and then you can move back to your regular shoe…once you get into the grove… Thanks

I run in the Mizuno Precision and love it. More cushioning that the DS Trainer, but still lightweight and good for long mileage. I recently did a marathon (and all of the training leading up to it) in them with no problem. Just a thought if you’re game for considering something besides Asics.

If you are going to ramp up your mileage (esp if you approach FM.2.0 type mileage) to 60-80 mpw, the Kayano is a great shoe. The DS Trainer is a terrible high mileage shoe mainly because it doesn’t last very long at all. The new Kayano is very light for a structured, durable trainer and is well worth the high cost as it can last 600 miles in an efficient runner. I also like the Wave Precision that the other poster mentioned, but they also do not last very long in the forefoot.

Vitruvians. Get healthy feet at the same time you get higher mileage.

Vitruvians. Probably the Proportion II. Email Chuck at vitruvianrunning.com. I love mine. I’ve had a number of pairs, as have my 3 daughters, a niece, a daughter’s boyfriend and others. $60. You can return them if they don’t fit properly.

BTW, IMHO when you ramp up miles, you want to concentrate on being light footed, not squishy shoed.

Another fan of the Mizuno Wave Precision here. Lightweight at 9.9 oz but I also find it durable - and it looks cool! The Wave Rider is also good option for a trainer, it offers more cushioning but it’s a little heavier (11.1 oz).

I’ve had very good luck with the Vitruvian Proportion IIs. They’ve really toughened up my feet and lower legs.

With narrow feet & low arches, I’d stay away from the Mizuno Rider (my shoe of choice - wide foot/mid to high arches)

The Mizuno Inspire is a mild-stability shoe with decent cushioning and the stability focused in the heel to midfoot, which I think makes a nicer transition than an Asics stability shoe, where the posting extends from the front of the heel to nearly the ball of the foot. Sloppy turnover IMO. Mizunos tend to suit the wider foot in my experience, but it may be worth a try if you haven’t already.

I will also enthusiastically endorse the Vitruvian’s!!

be aware that my input is counter to the minimalist faction endorsing the Vitruvians.

I’ve been a fan of Kayano’s for years and hated the most recent version (12’s)…so I recently switched to the Mizuno Wave Nirvana II. I have about 80 miles in them so far and love them. Might be worth a look.

FWIW, I also run in DS Trainers for races and tempo runs.
