Help me pick a new road bike frame

Due to forces outside my control i am now vacant one road bike frame. I’m more interested in light weight than aero. My last frame was pretty light and weighed 1020 grams. My last frame was also very stiff in the head tube, which i like. Bikes with speed wobbles need not apply. I’m 6’2", 180lb. I’m replacing a 57.5 top tube, but i could go 1 cm longer if needed. I can take a specialized 58, cervelo 58, or equivilant sizing. Who has some ideas on what i should get. I use it for training and racing, mostly crits, some road races. I don’t think i will buy without somehow getting an actual frame weight. Unfortunately my local shops choose not to cater to my need for details. Can anyone give some actual frame weights in my size? Any other ideas? Can anyone chime in with some ride reports on other brands like Scott, Cannondale, Look, or other? How about the idea of the integrated seat mast?

Your question seems tailor-made for weightweenies.starbike.com - you might want to give them a try. Out of curiosity, what were you riding before?

PM sent.

Sounds like you’re a candidate for either a SystemSix or SuperSix.

While my opinion is that Cannodale’s list prices are too high, you can find them at great prices on ebay.

Your welcome. Enjoy your bike.

My Parlee Z4 size M with RD hanger and BB cable guide was 920g. A ML, which may be your size, is supposed to be around 950g, I think.

well, i can tell you this: i have a 56 2009 specialized tarmac 2 w/ sram red. race weight with 606 tubular combo is 14.75 pounds (i.e. under uci limit), and i didn’t even build it light. i know some guys riding 404 clinchers just to get the weight up to reg.

full disclosure: our team is sponsored by specialized. regardless, the bike is awesome. i’ve been on it since december and did a stage race in feb and crit & road race this weekend. the bike is stiff, climbs & descends with precision, and very stable in a crit.

and crit & road race this weekend<<

How did you do? Lots of crashes out there both days.

stuck the break in the 35+ 1/2/3 crit and finished 4th - with 3 hours sleep and a nasty hangover from tahoe bachelor party the night prior.

rr was much worse - hit the deck around 30mph at 10 miles in. was in the middle of the pack with nowhere to go, thought i was going to make it around and the next thing i know i’m on the pavement. got up and finished the race with the 10 other guys caught up in it but the peloton was long gone. forearm/elbow is really sore along with hip and shoulder and a good bit of road rash, but nothing appears to be broke. got out to ride for 2 hours in a downpour today so i’m counting my blessings it wasn’t worse. and good thing because i need to drill madera.

how about you? i was watching the p/1 race from the hood of the sram car. did you see that webcor guy get shoved into the barrier? snapped his steertube right in half. narly, but he walked away.

I am interested in the Specialized SL2 in the 58cm. My old bike weighed 16.0 lbs with SRAM Red/404 clinchers/Zipp SLC2 bar/Zipp120mm stem/heavy SMP seat. It’s a bit long but i could just do a 110mm stem and make up for it if it turns out to long with the 120mm. I’m most worried about headtube stiffness to resist the speed wobbles. Out of the last five frames i’ve had two have been to flexy up front. Does anyone have an accurate frame weight for the SL2 in a 58cm?

Thanks, i got the message. The frame looks nice but i dont think i’ll be going with Trek. They have done a good job sponsoring Lance but have been resistant to sponsor any local teams, Road or Tri, in my region. I’m leaning towards companies that have shown support for the local racers.

with the likes of boonen and fabian riding the frame, i can’t imagine it being all that flexy. i have two teammates who are national crit or rr champs and they haven’t mentioned anything like this either. you sure it wasn’t the headset being loose or something?

i believe they lowered the head-tube for the 09 model year - might help?

can’t find a frame weight anywhere, but if it helps, my sl2 with pt training wheelset weights only 15.5 pounds, so you ought to be able to get a 58 to that without much effort. btw, i built a module, which has the fact crankset.

I have never had a problem with a Specialized having the wobbles. I had a Tarmac Pro about 5 years ago and it was a good frame, no problems. It wasn’t particularly stiff but nowhere near flexy. I’m sure the newer ones are an improvement with the big headset bearings. I would like to try a Cannondale Super Six. Any ride reports out there?

Specialized Tarmac SL2. Now go buy it.

I am leaning towards the SL2, but i am also thinking of going the cheap route and buying a Cannondale CAAD 9. Who know what a 58cm CAAD 9, or a Super Six weighs? It’s been a while since i have ridden an aluminum frame. Are they still more stiff than the carbon frames? anyone?

CAAD9 is the stiffest stock al frame around and just below the R3 in most of the tests.
The weightweenies forums will have weights (there are a few recent threads on the ‘Introduction’ forum).
CAAD9 BB30 in white or black would be $750 for the frameset - easily replaceable when you crash in a crit.

dude you are 180 pounds…why do you want a light weight bike? Should go for the stiffest thing you can get…get a stiff bike and lose 10 pounds

You’re going to want a Kuota Kredo Ultra. Stiff, light, comfy for all day, and a great all-arounder bike. It’s what Team OUCH and Agritubel are riding. If you want more info, PM me.

I finally got a good weight for the 58cm SL2. It weighed 1090g for the frame, with BB cable guide on, downtube cable adjuster on, and the seatpost collar off, derailleur hanger on.
Pretty good. I’m leaning on building a flat crit race bike. ie CAAD9, rival etc… and a nicer bike for long rides and climbing. unknown frame (stiff, light) and my Red grouppo. Then it’s time to upgrade my Tri bike.

I’ve weighed them all:

Specialized Tarmac SL2 - 1040 grams
Cannondale Super Six - 1120 grams
Trek Madone SSL - 1080 grams
Cervelo R3 SL - 870 grams
Scott Addict - 790 grams
Cannondale CAAD 9 - 1150 grams
Scott CR1 - 980 grams

All size 54cm frames…
