Help me make cool stuff with my Mac (flyers, pics, etc.)

I have microsoft office and haven’t uploaded it yet, however I was wondering if I could get a few tips.

Basically I want to make professional looking flyers but don’t even know the basics yet. On a PC I simply used paint and Powerpoint to do this. Is there an equivalent to paint on the Mac? Are there better fonts I can find and use?

Thanx.

there are a variety of programs for mac to design flyers, etc.
Photoshop & Illustrator are a staple in most designers toolkit. Though they may be complicated to learn for some. There are plenty of tutorials available.
I think iWork has “Pages”, i don’t use it & can’t comment on it but I know it does some (consumer) design work.
You can also find ready made templates that you can customize.
As far as fonts, there are a bunch of free font sites that you can download some cool fonts. Dafont.com is the one I primarily use.

If you have iWork, I recommend using Pages over Office’s Word for making cool stuff. I have had much better luck dreaming up layouts from scratch or just modifying templates in Pages. There are so many little quirks in Word where it won’t quite let you do what you want. Every layout I’ve tried to start in Word I’ve thrown out and run back to Pages.

However, when purchasing iWork keep in mind that Numbers leaves A LOT to be desired; if you have a need for spreadsheets, stick with Excel.

I agree with iWork. Pages does this amazingly well.

As others have said, iWork does a very good job. If i t didn’t come free with your Mac and you don’t fell like shelling out cash, you may also want to check out OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org), a free (open source) alternative that I have found to be very well rounded (haven’t used it fo rthe things you mentioned though).
If you really want to do cool stuff with pics and graphics though, you should definitely take a closer look at GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/). It’s also an open source project (thus totally free) with functionality similar to Photoshop. The features it offers are simply amazing. Extremely powerful.
