I have decided on R3 (regular, not SL) for my new dream bike, but would appreciate your help picking a wheel set.
I currently have a set of Ksyrium on my current bike, so am interested in seeing whether there are any other wheel sets I should consider.
I am looking for reasonably light, but comfortable and stable wheels - not sure whether I would want all carbon considering they are expensive and I also hear that braking isn’t as great on those. I primarily ride in the mountains (Santa Monica mountains). Any body have a good suggestion for great climbing wheels? I should mention that I am an OK climber, but a very bad descender, particularly around those S-curves with cliffs on the side.
Pair of white Velosity Deep V Rims built around a wireless powertap.
Open Pros, Revo Spokes (radial front, 3X rear) DA or Chorus hubs.
Just doesn’t get better than that. Light, strong, easy to true, good hubs… Cant be beat.
why not build a set for yourself? after building a couple sets up, I really loathe stock wheels.
you could buy a pair of velocity, niobium, or Alex rims
dt-swiss, or sapim cx-ray spokes
and either White Industries, DT-Swiss, or maybe even Tune hubs.
right there your looking at a bomb-proof, sub $800, 1400g wheelset that comes with the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
Possibly if I could talk my husband into doing it. I should mention that I primarily rely upon my husband to do the actual work on my bike - those who have seen me with any tools would understand. : )
Call up the guys at Excel Sports. They are one of the best and hand build all their wheels. I’ve been able to test out some really cool builds that were wicked light and strong. They had a guy that was constantly building new designs and cross patterns. Very cool stuff.
If you havn’t picked up the frame yet, they are a cervelo dealer. Get the frame, then pick and choose each bolt, part, spoke, bar wrap and build design. Well worth the $ and time.
(I don’t work there and am not sponsored by them. They’ve just been a great shop to me with the best stuff.)
Zipp Zedtech 303,match the decal color with the R3.
Thanks for Excel recommendation. I was actually going to choose an internet retailer and build a bike on-line. I have decided on component group - I can order several sizes of stem, etc. to get the right sizing. So far, I know of Competitive Cycling and R&A. West LA does not seem to have much choices in terms of decent bike dealers. Our regular bike store does not carry Cervelo.
Reynolds DVC Carbon Clinchers…I have some for sale:-)
.
that is what i have on my R3, but i race with 404’s.
Does anyone here have any experience with American Classic or Fulcrum (road version)? I am somewhat wary of all carbon wheels. Note that I have been happy with Ksyrium SL and will likely keep these as a spare.
I’d go for handbuilts. Get either nobium or alex rims, and put them on Tune hubs. You can easily build a 1350 gram clincher wheel set for under or around $800.
Zipp 303 clincher hoops with CK hubs.
American Classic’s while their rims are light, and strong, have really shit hubs. Fulcrum’s are made by Campy, they’ve got nice hubs, and rims, albeit pretty darn heavy.
Give Mike Garcia a call. www.oddsandendos.
I have a set of his speedcific hubs laced to DT Swiss rr1.1 and they weigh 1520. They are light, stiff, and durable. Very inexspensive as well. He has a newer generation of hubs that are even lighter. Highly recemmend.

Let Rich know everything your looking for in a wheel and he can build a set for you.
They are very knowledgeable and helpful.
They are also in the Los Angeles area, so less than an hour from you.
Thanks. It seems that the consensus is to build a custom wheel set.
BTW, does anyone know much about the new wheel set Mavic is going to introduce this year?
Just go with a set of Campy Boras. I have not heard of a single complaint from anyone that owns a pair. At the Tour of California in February, they seemed to be the wheel of choice for the majority of the teams.
At $2999.00, those are probablly a bit too much for me.
Zipp 202 rims (tub)
