Rita is scheduled to hit Dallas on Saturday. However, I have a 6 hour bike ride scheduled for that day. It looks like I’ll be stuck indoors. What can I do on a trainer (I have a Computrainer) that would be the equivalent?
6 hours on a CT seems like it would produce insanity, what would be the trainer time equivalent?
Other workout options such as a run-bike-run workout? Would this be equivalent to the straight bike?
I would recommend locating a friend in Fort Worth where you can stay the night. Then, get a really big chainring and head west on schedule on Saturday morning. You should be able to stay on top of 85/11 for the whole ride.
Thanks. At what point is this equivalent to a 6 hour road session?
As for getting out of the way of Rita, it looks like it is going to cover most of Texas. Besides, El paso is too far and I would run the risk of meeting up with Francios!
Desert Dude is a pro at making up hurricane workouts! I think he’s already done this for me 2-3 times.
Just know that if they are predicting the storm will make landfall at, say 3 am Saturday, the weather will start going downhill sometime on Friday morning. Plan accordingly. Usually the weather leading up to the landfall time is the worst. And afterward, expect that your streets and sidewalks will be covered in debris and there will be downed powerlines and flooding. If you get any type of hurricane-force winds, it will probably be at least 1-2 days before the roads are clean enough for a road bike. Be careful!
If you lose power, riding indoors can really suck!! You may want to turn up your A/C now so that your house stays cooler longer if that happens!
BTW - I don’t have a CT, but I’ve found that if I rent enough good movies, a 3.5 hour ride indoors isn’t bad. Also, hurricane TV coverage can be pretty entertaining.
I normally don’t wear a watch, but 6hrs is 6hrs the last time I wore one. Where does a B/R/B/R/B/R/B workout = six hours on the road? I don’t believe there is a way to truly equate. Make the best of the situation. 6hrs of Biking and running beats 6 hours of doing nothing.
Is it possible to adjust the rest of your training cycle to work it in on a later date? Maybe you go for a 2.5hr run instead with 90min on the CT that afternoon, moving the 6hr ride to the next weekend. Then on Sunday maybe you run for 50min then ride another 90 doing IM pace or slightly above IM pace intervals.
If there is one thing I have learned from coaching over the past 10 years, it’s that being flexible with my athletes schedules, as Miami79 alluded to, is probably one of the most important tools that I have.
I doubt doherjo1 will have to worry about a blackout. Dallas might, but probably won’t get hurricane force winds, and if they do, it’s more likely to be on the lower end of the Cat 1.

Pray Hurricane Rita spares your domicile. Otherwise, skip the workout and get out as soon as possible.
