ok let me preface this by saying i know nothing about bike.
I am assembling my bike after it was shipped to me by my local lbs. Everything seems ok except that the rear derailer cable is not long enough to attack to the attach point on the downtube. Does this make sense? ANyone know what im doing wrong? btw its ultegra if that makes a dif

Sounds like you either routed the cable wrong, or, more likely, you used the wrong cable. The two cables are different lengths, a long one for the rear derailleur and a shorter one for the front.
hmmm well the cables were not detacted from the bike. so everything is conected as it was when it was packed just have to fit it all to where it holds it to them from. under the crank there are two cables that go to the handle bar this one goes to the right brake/ shifter and is attachted to the shifter but will not reach the point on the downtube where the screw goes. The cable is plenty long enough its the rubber around the cable that is preventing it to reach the point.

not really making sense… the cables are already in the shifter correct? you’re trying to get the shifter cable to fit into the rear derailleur?
Make sure you’ve shifted into the highest gear before you try it again.
Gotcha. I agree with MojojoMasterG. try shifting the rear derailleur to the highest gear, so there is as much slack in the cable as possible. Even then, you might need to physically extend the derailleur to give it enough slack to fit it where it’s supposed to go. If you can’t figure it out, take it to your local bike shop and they can probably fix it for you in a snap for no charge.
Don’t feel bad, I have no clue how to take off my pedals and put my new pedals on. Hmmm, not sure if too many of you here ride mountain bikes?

Nothing is wrong with them, I just have no clue as to how to take them off and put my new ones on. What kind of tools do I need?
you need a pedal wrench to remove pedals. Usually a 15mm or 9/16". The right side pedal turns clockwise to remove, the left side turns counter clockwise to remove.
As for the cables, if you are unsure what you are doing, you shouldn’t mess with them, take it to a bike shop to fix. I’m sure it’s something simple, but if you don’t have the know how to get it right, do you really trust the adjustments that you would do to get you through a long ride without mishap? Ask to watch what they do so you can learn.
Thank you one and all. As soon as I shifted to the highest gear there was plenty of slack in the cables to attach them. MOst importantly I feel like slightly less of a poser being able to at least do minimal assembly of my shop w/o running to my LBS.
