Help - Felt B2 (installing powercranks)

Hi,

I bought a set of shimano compatible powercranks but I’ve been having a frustrating time trying to fit them on my Felt B2. As you probably know if you’re reading this, the rear brake on a Felt B2 (DA etc) is “hidden” down by the bottom bracket and it strikes some cranks (eg. zipp vuma quad, powercranks). With powercranks the brakes don’t hit the crank arm, they hit the silver plate that adjoins the bottom bracket when you try to install them.

Has anyone been able to fit powercranks to a Felt? If so, how did you do it? I assume that you either used a “special” rear brake or a 118m bottom bracket (instead of a standard 109.5) or both.

There are a few options that I’ve considered but I’m not made of money and would much rather copy someone else’s success than buy various brakes and bottom brackets just to see.

I’ve considered trying:

  1. TRP T925 Brakes (Rappstar used Oval Concepts (different brand same brakes) to get his vuma quad working);
  2. a Simkins caliper;
  3. Zero Gravity Zero G brakes (more than I want to spend but if I knew this would be succesful then I’d consider it); or
  4. a 118mm spindle (obvioulsy I’d rather NOT increase the width of the bottom braket so this would be the move of last resort).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

If you can wait until a decent morning hour in CA you can just call up Frank or Andrew at the shop and I’m sure they would be glad to help. Their customer service has always been outstanding.

Thanks for the reply.

You’re right on the customer service. I have communicated with Andrew (rudely over the holiday season) who was very nice but it was not a problem that he had encountered before.

I’m pretty sure that it was his idea to use a wider bottom bracket but I am hoping to get some feedback from someone who has actually made it work (and preferably not with a wider BB).

It is not a problem I have heard of before. Usually a longer BB only moves the right side out so if you are hitting on both sides this may not solve the problem. Can you send us a picture of what is going on? Maybe that will give us some ideas.

Thanks very much Frank.

Unfortunately I’m moving countries this weekend and just this morning I sent the cranks ahead with most of my stuff. I’ll get some photo’s but I probably won’t be able to do so for a week or so.
