Never understood why people bike in tri clothes. It’s one thing if you are doing a simulation or specific brick, but for just a normal 60k ride?? I always wear bibs and a jersey, socks, gloves and a road helmet. Ride like a cyclist, run like a runner and do bricks like a triathlete.
Bike clothes are designed to work well for biking. Bibs are amazing compared to even the best tri shorts. Jerseys have good pockets for spare/tools and food or extra clothes. It just makes sense to be comfortable when you are spending 10+ hrs s week on the bike.
Exactly.
I can see the point about trying out in training what you plan to wear in a race, as you don’t want to find out it’s a problem in the middle of the race. But you only need to do that just a handful of times, at most. As far as regular training goes, however, I want to be as comfortable as possible, not just for that ride, but for the next day’s ride. In other words, I don’t want tomorrow’s ride adversely impacted because I wore something less optimal today.
Money has nothing to do with it. It is about comfort and the right gear for the job. You have an issue with uncomfortable tri shorts, fix it by using bib cycling shorts.
Do you ride with a disk wheel all the time, or do you have training wheels?
Edit: how tight are you tying your tri shorts? I’ve never had a problem with a painful band on my tri shorts. Do they bruise or is it just uncomfortable? Maybe you are wearing them too much and causing some sensitive areas to develop, try finding different pairs that sit at different heights.
I wear cycling shorts on my roadbike but Tri shorts on my TT bike. I just find that the pad on my bike shorts is a bit too thick for the forward tilt position I have on my TT bike and things are too bunched up. The thin pad on the Trishorts serves me well and I’ve done 200km rides on my TT bike with it with no complaints.
p.s. I run in running gear. I swim in swim jammers. And after races I wear old cotton T-shirts and Crocs on my feat.
So triathlon gear is not the right gear for triathlon training. Ok let me try to get this. I do not understand all the people who say you cant train in tri-gear. But I try to.
Are saying that triathlon gear is generally uncomfortable and it is only worn to be able to complete the 3 disciplines one after another during a race?
And that people put up with the discomfort for the race’ sake. But in training we should always use gear specific for each discipline, even though clothes exist which are made for all three disciplines.
Because triathlon gear is not made for triathlon. It is adapted so all 3 disciplines can be practiced with one set of clothes, but it sacrifices comfort and should not be used for training.
I formulated it a bit. But, that would be the best explanation about this subject I have read on ST. Nobody said this up until now, but it makes sense if this is the concept.
It would explain why (it seems like) nobody on ST except me trains in triathlon gear and you guys think i’m weird for doing so. That is, If that is what your saying.
But about the shorts giving me pain thing, It is mostly uncomfortable but becomes more and more uncomfortable the more I ride. After an hour in the saddle it’s painful and I just want to remove them to get relief
I could use bib shorts for cycling, I do actually use only bibs now because I have this issue. But asked to get an opinion about this and if its was normal. From what I understand this pain is not normal. I should try a different brand shorts with a different cut. Or go to the doctor because something is wrong with my belly since it does not happen to anyone else.
I have a pair (actually 2 pair) of cycling shorts that were great about 15+ pounds ago. Now, there seems to either be a tub or allergic reaction at my waist level in the front. Not sore but can get a bit itchy and rub a bit. I wear these only for indoor sessions on the trainer under an hour and a half. Or, when I commute which is under an hour each way.
My Tri shorts have less padding and are tighter but I have no problem wearing them other than the muffin top as they are lower and tighter.
And, no problem wearing any of my bibs when just cycling.
So triathlon gear is not the right gear for triathlon training. Ok let me try to get this. I do not understand all the people who say you cant train in tri-gear. But I try to.
Fundementally you are correct - like the saying goes: ‘Don’t try anything new on raceday’
But i just can’t bring myself to do a Saturday morninig run through my neighbourghood in a pair of tight tri shorts and a sleeveless tri top.
+3 on Desoto tribibs I’ll never wear anything else
How is the sizing on these? I’ve thought about getting them previously but since it would be an internet order (having never tried them on) I have never pulled the trigger.
True. I don’t either. But I usually do my weekly swim-run, swim-bike and bike-run in tri-shorts.
Like this:
Swim-Run: Tri-shorts. No top for the swim. Add t-shirt or dryfit for the run.
Swim-Bike: Tri-shorts. No top for the swim. Add cycling jersey for the bike.
Bike-Run: Tri-shorts. Loose plain cycling jersey or running top.
For single discipline workouts:
Swim only: Tri-shorts, No top. (There is a sign that reads “no speedos, be reasonable” so I am)
Bike only: Bib shorts, Cycling Jersey.
Run only: Running shorts, Running top.
I do wear the “right” gear for single discipline workouts, except for the swim, where I do it “wrong” again. But that’s because I don’t own speedo’s.
See how for multiple disciplines I’d use a tri-short everytime? It made sense to me since I had my wife drop me at the beach for my swim-run. I’d do my swim while leaving my shoes, shirt, visor and glasses on the beach. After the swim I’d get out. air dry a bit put the stuff on then run all the way home. Swim-bikes were the same. Got dropped off with my bike, wife stays until I finish swimming (bike is too expensive to leave on the beach by itself) then I dry with a towel, get on the bike, do my training and ride home afterwards. Bike-Run’s are usually: Ride with a group, stop at someones home when we are done riding, get off and start running. The transitions are pretty short (10 minutes or less) to not waste too much sunlight. All these training sessions are after work, which is the reason why we race against the sun. Maybe this explains why (not only me) use gear that allows us to go from one discipline to the other quickly and without carrying allot of stuff.
