OK, I finally got the tubular-clinchers on my wheels (oh my thumbs) and now I’m trying to apply the sealant but I can’t follow the video (Tufo website) because I’m working with a disc and a Hed H3. On the video you simply screw the tube of sealant onto the valve but with a disc and H3 this is impossible.
How did you apply the sealant to your disc or H3 without making a total mess?
The easiest way is to put it in before you install the tire. If you must put it in while installed, I use a 10cc syringe from the drug store (the kind little kids get with their liquid meds) and put in about 20cc total. It still has the potential to make a mess but it might be easier with a disc and or H3.
If you take the tire off and put the sealant in, the tire should be easier to put on the second time.
For a disk, you could try putting the sealant in before mounting the tire (your poor thumbs might not want to do that). Another thing you could try is getting a couple inch long plastic tube that will fit over the valve stem (like they use in aquariums) so you can fill the tire without the disk getting in the way.
Thanks guys, mounting them for the first time was damn near impossible. I’ll re-mount after 200 miles or so, hopefully that will stretch them out enough to make mounting much easier.
Maybe I am just used to finicky tires since we run Hutchinson clinchers, but when I installed my Tufo tubular clinchers last year, they went on with very little fuss although I will admit that seating the bead did take a little bit more work than I expected. I think it took me all of 15-minutes from start to finish to install them on a set of American Classic CR 350 wheels - about 5-minutes less than Hutchinson Carbon Comps or Fusions.
The valve on the tube of sealant is threaded and you just have to take the valve out of your tufo— screw on the tube of sealant and squeeze some in. When you are screwing the sealant on keep the tire and wheel above the sealant screw it on and turn the entire wheel and sealant assembly over squeeze-- release and turn back over unscrew insert the valve and make sure to spin the wheels for a few minutes to distribute the sealant.
The sealant seems to be water soluable and I just kept an old towel and a damp rag handy to wipe anything down.
I have installed 4 or 5 pairs of Tufo tubular clinchers’s to date. Some go on really easy and others are near impossible. I don’t know if it’s jet specials vs. jet pro, the colour, the date of manufacture… that makes a difference
Once you have them on and pumped up they should be stretched out in no time. It usually is just the initial install that hard, after that they should go on a lot easier.
