Heel problem! Plantar Help!

“Do you wear the sock every night? I never missed a day with this dorsal splint, even when the pain went away. I kept wearing it for an additional couple of weeks just to make sure.”

I try to, but half the time I take it off at some point during the night. The more I can wear it the better it gets. Thanks for the link this brace looks better than the sock from a pressure on the toes standpoint.

I would search out an anesthesiolgist who deals with chronic pain and ask for an evaluation.
Uhhhh…what? I’m not sure where you are from, but here in The USA an anethesiologist is an MD trained to administer anesthesia and monitor the patients vitals during a procedure.

Probably a better description of the Anesthesiologist is one who has been trained to prevent or relieve pain and to wake a patient up after anesthesia (at least that is what most people going in for an operation expect).

Anesthesiology is the only specialty that I know of that actually requires time be devoted to teaching residents how to treat both acute and chronic pain. Back in the days I was teaching residents The American Board increased the required length of residency from 2 to 3 years and also increased the amount of specific time required to be devoted solely to the relief of acute and chronic pain from 2 to 3 months. Most doctors are simply awful at it if it isn’t “ordinary”.

Regarding RROOF’s declaration that you (or the person who started this thread) don’t have RSD (CRPS). While unlikely, until this problem actually responds to a therapy with cure it remains a diagnostic possibility. Fortunately, this syndrome generally will get better slowly on its own but after two years this is unlikely to happen soon, if RSD is the correct diagnosis. Of course, one doesn’t know if one doesn’t look for it. When I was practicing this was by far the most common missed diagnosis. It is much more common than most think. About 50% of the people who walked into my office actually had this disorder because I aggressively looked for it. I had about 50% of those pain free within a week. 2 years is a long time for something to linger. I throw it out as a possibility.

Holy shit. This is the freakin WORST and most useless thread I’ve ever seen on pf. Geezus people, help the brother out!!

Danco, go to this thread on Letsrun (where you should be going for advice on this problem anyway), and look at the advice given by Bum, the 7th post down. Bum is one of the most knowledgeable posters there, and I’ve learned a boatload about running and injuries from him. I did exactly what Bum suggests, and I was able to put in consistent 70 mile weeks last year, and a 100 mile week at the max. I haven’t had a flicker of pain since then, and I thought my athletic career was done. I did socks, stretches, cort shots, the works. ESWT is you next step. End of discussion. Make an appointment NOW. Read all you can on the internet about it, but follow Bum’s advice and in 3 months you will never deal with this problem again. It’s been 3 years for me, and my pf is 100% gone. 100%.

Well lets see:
Pain is in the right foot where the facia hooks to the heal. inside of heal right in front of the heal.
morning pain when getting up.
pain when getting up from rest.
Got it about two years ago when switching to POSE method of running.
Last bout was when training for Ironman CDA, Started hurting about 4 weeks out from the race. Ran through it and did race anyway… haven’t been on a good run sense.
Some time aches when I walk alot on it.
Been seen by MD Dr., ortho and others, said I have plantar faciitis.
Typical symptoms of PF,
I can feel a lump or swelling at the base of the heal.
I have rolled on balls, iced heated it etc.
Feels best when it is warmed up but will ache at the end of the day when I have done to much.
I wear othotics now but only helps a small bit… still hurts during the day.
Been wearing orthotics now for the bast 7-8 months.

Gosh not sure what else to say… any more info needed… this has been such a pain… I ride my bike from time to time but sometimes I think that this may hurt it as well. I also still swim but not as much as I once did when in training.

Anything please… gosh I want to run again… There must be something that people have done to ride themselves of this… What do top athletes do?

  • I have been going through the exact same thing with my left foot since Oct, started with the same heel pain yada yada yada, did the cort shot thing, went back and forth to the Fam doc, and nothing was helping, Finally refered back to Podiatrist who sent me for a ultra sound for my foot this past Tues. and low and behold I found out I have a torn PF with lots of scar tissue, I don’t know which treatment I will be getting yet as I have to wait for the report to be sent to my doctor, But my feeling is it’s going to be sugery. I’m pretty pissed My tri season is over before it began. but I’m pretty happy I now have a solution to my problem.

So my advise is get it scanned to rule out any tears, then treat accordingly

Good luck.
