I have an issue with my foot that I have never felt before. I have a pain to the right of my achilles tendon on my right heel area. I have noticed it for the last couple of days. The best way to describe it as a stretching feeling. I can reproduce the pain/feeling when I do an calf stretch, it feels like something is stretching tightly across my heel to the right of my tendon.
Any ideas? It sounds like Hagland’s deformity but I cannot feel a bump or spur.
Depends what side of the tendon you are talking about. Medial side, could be posterior tibial tendonitis. Lateral side peroneal tendonitis. Right next to: Plantaris tendon issue. I would start by googling the plantaris tendon …
Irritation of the achilles bursa? Sensitive to external pressure (when you apply pressure with fingers)?
Also, what changes in your training have occurred? Running more, new shoes, etc…
I have increased my running intensity but not duration. The only real change is that I have been doing hill repeats on the tradmill twice a week for last 3 weeks.
Treadmill could be your issue. My experience (personal and clinical) is that the uniformity of the surface can contribute to connective tissue issues (including irritation of bursae).
You may want to back off for 7-14 days.
Any visibile swelling (compare to the other foot)?
I tend to agree with comaboy. However, you should also be concerned with a partial tendon avulsion. Question; does it hurt right where the achilles meets the bone? and, are you currently taking or recently taken antibiotics?
It is my right foot, and to the right/outside of my tendon
NOT the plantaris - that runs along the medial side of the achilles. Likely just some early Achilles tendinosis/itis from the hill training (more common with an eccentric contraction on a dorsiflexed foot). Peroneal tendon issues are still possible since they (longus and brevis) run just lateral to the tendon and can get irritated as well with hill training, espeically with any other forefoot issues.
It feels more like grating/stretching feeling than painfull. I feel it about an inch to the right of the achilles between the ankle bone and right side of heel.
No I have not had antibiotics for at least a year.
Another thought, in the location you are refering to is the posterior calcaneo-fibular ligament. Typically, this is the third ligament in an ankle sprain, and usually indicates a serious ankle sprain. According to what you are saying, this doesn’t seem to be the case. Have you sprained this ankle seriously in the past? Could be a manifestation of an old injury.
Just my opinion, but i would lay off any activity which causes pain to this area for 1-2 weeks and if it persists, see your doc or PT.
