5 months ago i purchased a hed3 wheelset (not the 3c) from a guy on craiglist (of course he said they were in perfect condition).
anyway the wheel does look great but the bearing are kinda done and need to be replaced.
the problem is im from israel and hed doesn’t have any distrebuters here so i thought about paying a guy here to build me some ceramic bearings, the problem is that i dont have the mesurments of the bearings,i did notice slowman’s article on the main site and i searched some posts back but i didn’t find anything about mesurments.i will know how to replace them but if somebody know the exact mesurment so ill be able to manufcture mine here it will really help.
if that helps the serial number on my wheels is **6001 2rs **,dont know if that tells you something.
will really apriciate your help guys.
I’d contact HED directly and find out what to do from them…
The size of a 6001 sealed cartridge bearing is ID (Inner Diameter) 12mm, OD (Outer Diameter) 28mm, W (Width) 8mm. Like Slowman’s article shows, you can pop out the old bearings and pop in new 6001 bearings. I believe the rear uses loose 1/4" bearings on the drive side though.
I followed the following instructions when I replaced my hed3 bearings. Worked like a charm.

thanks,i was wondering, are all the rear bearings and front have the same size?
cuz i know that rear bearings sometimes have diffrent sizes.
I believe all of the loose bearings on the rear drive-side are 1/4", but Epiclesis probably knows better than I. The other bearings are the 6001 cartridges. I don’t know the actual size of the spherical bearings within a 6001 cartridge. By the way, you probably already know that you can use any high-quality 6001 bearing. You don’t need to get them from Hed.
erm so basiclly i think im supposed to get 6 of those:

i really suck at bike mechanics, sorry for the question but what does “on the rear drive-side are 1/4” mean? that this are not the 6001 but are diffrent bearings? will really apriciate if you can explain.and damn this ceramic bearings arent cheap at all, think ill consider getting the normal once.
Right, that’s the product you want if you want a ceramic hybrid bearing. But for one wheelset you need 3 not 6. The front takes two and the rear takes one plus loose 1/4" spherical bearings like this:

Of course, you can get these in ceramic hybrid too.
Keep in mind, I’m no expert either. Just in the same boat as you: thinking of replacing the bearings in a used Hed3 wheelset.
Don’t want to steal this thread but I have a related question. My Hed3 has developed some wobble. Will replacing the bearings help fix this problem. I need to open my brakes fairly wide to accomodate this. Thanks.
Did I give oper the right advice? Also do you have any tips for replacing the rear bearings? For instance, do you just push out the cap over the sealed bearing in the rear when you pop out the rear cartridge bearing?
happy i raised this subject, seems im not the only one looking for some answers :).
basiclly i have a slight wobble to,not really significant though, switching the bearings wont help the wobble, this is what i understood from my mechanic, the wobble comes from the core of the wheel (forgot the professional term for the core).
im going to look into it in the next few days, going to tell you what i came up with.
I know I’ve read that if a Hed3 goes out of true it’s either: 1. the bearings/axle 2. shims in hub need to be adjusted or 3. the wheel is shot. Since you can replace the bearings fairly inexpensively (with steel), it’s probably worth a try. Check out these posts:

Thanks olobious. I’ll try the bearings first.
Know this is crazy old. However, this is the very cool thing about ST. Find an answer to my exact question! Now if we can get the Search function on the forums to work…please! Found via Google.
