I am thinking about buying a Jet 60 wheelset and a friend of mine told me that HED wheels are hard to true. Since I am not from US and there is no dealer in Brazil, that is a major concern about these wheels. Any comments? Thanks.
Some versions of them take special tool (nutdriver with very narrow head), other than that, same as any other wheel.
To true the Jets, you must remove the tire and have the proper size nut driver(ask the size from HED). It may be a pain, but not that hard.
Truing the wheel is not that bad, especially with a Jet. In a jet, you’re basically just truing an aluminum rim, since the carbon does not interfere structurally. Truing an Alps is tougher, since the carbon hoop is structural.
You need a 5.5mm socket with thin walls. Most sockets that you buy in a hardware store will be too thick, but you can easily find the correct one in an automotive parts store (or take a dremel to the outside of the regular one). Once you have the socket, you’re good to go.
2107,
The Hed3 trispoke is very hard to true. It requires a special carbon spoke wrench. Most shops cannot afford one so most Hed3 trispoke wheels that are out of true go back to the factory for truing. Just kidding, I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist. (Its really a bearings, cone and hub alignment issue.)
I believe the Hed Jet wheels are much easier to true. More along the lines of a traditional spoked wheel.
