That makes little sense. Round spokes add maybe 0.5g per spoke and you’re comparing wheels with different fairing depth. There’s nothing you can infer from the round spokes here.

I disagree a bit here. A Sapim CX-Ray is about 4.6g, and the Sapim race is about 5.6-6g. So let’s figure conservatively a ~45g gain total for spokes over the Jet 6.
The carbon fairing probably adds very little weight on the 5mm difference from the Jet 5-6. It only adds about ~75g for the front, and ~95g for the rear from the Jet 4 according to HEDs website. That is for a 16mm increase. By that, I would guess the fairing on the Jet6 is only about ~40-50g more per wheel tops. Maybe quite a bit less. So maybe still a smidge lighter for the Jet5, but this brings me to my point. If they are way off the listed weight and about the same weight as the Jet 6+, I can find those used cheaper. All in all, I was just looking to see if anyone had any first hand experience with them and the weight. It takes me awhile to make spending decisions!

Same and I was kicking around the 5 vs. 6 + ball for a bit and then the Black vs. ‘regular’ versions. Eventually I found a great deal on a set of almost new wheels at a shop and went with the 6+ non black version. They’re great wheels, aero, not crazy heavy, resilient and I was able to set them up tubeless.

The mass of the wheels may very well vary quite a bit, often by more than 50 g. your best bet, as suggested by the second post, is to give MBS a call, ask them to determine the mass of a specific set, and buy that set, if the mass is acceptable to you.
You could get 90% of the people telling you that their Jet 6+ or Jet 5 has a particular mass and still end up with the odd set that just happened to be on the heavier side.
I had a set of Jet 5 Plus wheels from MBS, but don’t have the exact weight on them. My Jet 6 Plus weigh 745 front, 960 rear with rim tape. So 1705 total. One thing to keep in mind is the Jet 5 Plus wheels come with rounded spokes. The Jet 6 Plus come with CX Ray aero blades spokes. I didn’t realize that when I purchased the 5s, and ended up selling them locally for 50 less than I got them for. Probably doesn’t make much of a difference, but if I was buying an aero wheel set I wanted bladed spokes.
This was one of my concerns that the claimed weight wasn’t correct for the 5s if they used heavier spokes than the 6.
You are now concerned about the weight of spokes?!!?!?! Again, if this is a concern of yours, I would look elsewhere. My overall system weight will vary probably more if I decide to stick 3 gels into my back pocket instead of 2 on the morning of a ride. There’s research. And then there’s over-the-top obsession. If I’m being blunt, You have crossed that line.

Thanks, if it bothers you, you don’t have to read or comment.

I’m fine. If it bothers you, you shouldn’t ask for the advice.
Thanks for posting. Was always wondering the same thing. I am trying to figure out what I want for my next set of wheels. I am trying to figure between HED Jets (want black versions) and Flo Carbon (49/64 or 64/77) or possibly something else. I am interested in the black jets for the brake track. But, I don’t want to drop over 1k for them. I feel like the used prices are too high right now. The $800 price is tempting.
I currently have FLO 30s on my bike.

Thanks. Glad to see someone else is thinking in a similar way. There is some helpful discussion above in some of the posts. If you get some of the Jet 5s, report back here and let us know what you think!

Easy to go down into a rabbit hole on all sorts of considerations… I recently went with HED RC4’s Performance (so not exactly the 5’s that are exclusive to MBS) but similar considerations for me at the time. For me, the 6’s and 9’s with their greater depth wasn’t worth the trade off in added weight plus the buffeting in winds that someone said they felt on exposed climbs (i.e. Skyline Drive - VA/DC area). So I went w/the 4’s. I also opted not for the Black series after a chat/call w/HED. More convenient to not have to change brake pads, etc., and there’s also a $ savings there.
After about of month of rides, so far so good. No complaints.

Yeah, those 4+ black series would probably be my top choice of all and a good balance of weight, aero and braking. However, they are way out of my price range, and even the standard 4+ is $400 more than the 5s. That is good feedback that you provided though. Enjoy those wheels!

Why is the 4 more expensive? Is it a newer style rim/shape?
40-Tude: Any pics or more info you can provide would be great. I am not sure what to do and most of the issue is the pricing. I kinda wish I could just spend between 600-750 and get a great set.
(Nacho Libre): Anyways…
Thanks
To Littlefoot… There’s good pics, info, specs on the 4’s at the HED site,
https://hedcycling.com/products/jet-rc-performance-series/
Retail price is $1200 (black is $1500). I was able to order a set when they had holiday pricing which brought it below $1k.
Also, someone pointed me to the merlin site when I was researching wheels. Merline has phenomenal prices on wheels and other items (but they don’t carry HED)

The HED Jet RC4 wheelset is built with better hubs and spokes, so it is more expensive.
Anyone have any direct experience with the RC5+? Apparently, it is exclusive to my bike shop. Right now it is $799. 55mm depth, 21 mm internal, and a claimed weight of 1624g. My concern is the weight. I get it that aero is more important than weight, but I have a weight weenie Supersix EVO that is sub 15lbs, and I don’t want to add tons of weight. I know some of the jet 6+ wheels ha e been over claimed weight, and I was curious if anyone weighed these. I have contacted MBS multiple times as well, but hoping for direct experience.
I’m kind of hijacking your thread, but I’m curious as to what made you interested in that particular set? I ask because I’m also considering those wheels for my road bike (Cervelo R5), but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the choices. I have a set of HED Jet 6+ on my tri-bike and am very satisfied with them, but they are the only decent set of wheels I have ever owned or tried so I have no real basis of comparison.

Good question! I guess I am considering the Jets for a couple reasons. I really can’t justify too much money on wheels as I am just a weekend warrior. For $799, it was about the best deal going for something that had an aluminum brake track.
As a weight weenie myself, I like tubular rims.
As a weight weenie myself, I like tubular rims.
I thought of that as well, but according to various rolling resistance tests, there are very few if any tubulars that can touch some of the new clinchers out there. I am not going to put expensive aero wheels on my bike and then lose 5-8w for rolling resistance.
Tubular wheels can be very cheap.
Tubular wheels can be very cheap.
And let me guess: anyone can and should learn to mount their own tubies.
On a more serious note, that’s probably the bigger issue here. I bet a lot of people could learn to properly glue a tubular. But it’s more involved than mounting a tubed clincher. I’m not sure if it’s more involved than mounting a tubeless clincher, but I’d vote yes (because I’ve tried, and they did not go on very nicely, although they did at least not roll off). However, the knowledge is really not as widespread as it used to be, so you have fewer friends to learn from, and fewer bike stores experienced in gluing. Your logistics chain is different, in that you will need a spare pre-glued tubular if your sealant can’t plug the hole (and I’m not sure about this, but my impression is that if you inject sealant into a tubular, you will eventually clog up the latex tube inside it, and that can’t be replaced unless you unstitch the thing).
