HED disk and attempts to inflate

I bought a used HED disk. It came with a TUFO tubular/clincher, which can be inflated to 175 psi and a crackpipe. The only problem is I can’t seem to inflate the thing. It keeps on popping off when I try. Is there a tried and true method? Does it take two people. What pumps actually go up to 175 (mine only registers to 160) Any advice would be appreciated.

It is probably easiest with 2 people. Don’t worry about getting to 175, it most likely isn’t faster, it might actually be slower, and it certainly will be less comfortable.

First, you don’t need 175. 145-155 is plenty.

Second, you need to find a pump that will hold the crack pipe, and then you need to learn how to hold the crack pipe on the valve stem. Tricky stuff, because you need two hands for the pump, and one to hold the crack pipe on the valve stem.

I pump with one hand, and when I get to about 100 psi, I start leaning on the pump with my stomach. It’s a good ab workout and gets your tire inflated.

hold the crack pipe with one hand, pump with dominant hand, better have a good hand and yeah forget about 175 psi, I ride 140 max
.

I use one hand on the crack pipe and one on the pump and inflate to 160!

If the crack pipe won’t work without leaking it could be that you need to replace the rubber piece inside. LBS should have the replacement.

The only pump in the world to use is a SILCA! Mine reads to over 200psi!

You don’t need 3 hands, 2 people, or 1 big bicep. Buy a length of 1" wide velcro strip that is at least 6" long or so. Assuming the valve opening in the disc is at 12 o’clock, put the chuck (aka crack pipe) on the valve stem and then insert the velcro strip under the chuck and through the disc opening. Bring one end of the strip up and over the tire and then stick the other end to it to secure the chuck in place. Assuming the chuck’s rubber gasket maintains a good seal against the valve stem, you should be able to get your 175 psi without any problem. I’ve had 2 HED discs over 15 years and this method has always worked for me. I have a 12 year old Zefal Husky. It’s a workhorse of a pump that easily inflates tires to 170 psi.
