Hed 3D Disc (1)

Can someone explain to me why Hed makes or made the 3D disc… I saw a couple of these at Tri-zone the other day and I was wondering what the point of it was. Besides costing more.

I believe I once read that the tri spokes help the airflow over the disk in much the same way Zipp claim the dimples work, but then again I would want to hear that cause I own one. They’re not the lightest disk on the market from what I recall but they’re the sexiest as far as I am concerned, pluse they make a lot of noise!

They did stop making them due to tha majority not meeting their desired tolerances. The ones available for purchase were meant to be fine though. Just don’t remove any shim that may have been installed else you’ll wind up with a nasty wobble.

I used to have one…a VERY nice wheel.

I own a HED 3D disc. I called and spoke to people at HED before I bought it. They stated that, as mentioned earlier, that very few met the specs. The ones on the market did meet specs. They stopped production because to make any $$ they would have needed to sell the discs for about $1800, which was way over priced. They were very difficult to produce.

I have not raced it yet, but so far I like the disc and I’ve owned, the HED reg., Zipp and Campy Ghibli. I liked the Ghibli far better then the HED reg.or Zipp. I’ll reserve judgment until after I race the 3D a few times. First race is Clermont, April 3.

I have seen rear Hed 3 wheels “filled-in”. It is not an easy thing to get straight doing it after the fact.

I imagine the R&D on a new mould to do a filled-in Hed 3 would be quite prohibitive, especially since the R&D was done for them on the Hed 3. In the end, why mess with perfection?

You do have a nice collection of wheels. I still pine after a Zipp 3000 wheel at this point. I have a sneaking suspicion that you will STILL like your Ghibli better than any other disc you own. This is why I never borrowed one even when I had the chance- I would sell a kidney, ten pints of plasma, and whatever else I could in order to buy one of those.

There’s a rear Zipp 3000 wheel on eBay as we speak. I’m also dealing with a private individual for a set of black one’s. I have the yellow set, but would love a second set for the other Zipp bike. You can never have too many toys!

I too own a 3D.This wheel never worked good enough to use in a race.I sent it back and had it converted to a track disc.It works fine now.

I want a front. 3000 wheels are freewheel only, right?

Ya, the 3000 wheels are only freewheel. I run a 7 speed freewheel with my 8 speed components and have no problems.

If someone has a 700c, preferably tubular, HED 3D disk, I would be happy to take it off your hands!!!
