I just bought a set of these on Ebay and was wondering since I don’t have them in my possesion yet- how do you inflate the tires? Do I need any kind of pump adapter or will a regular pump head fit in the recess for the valve? Do I need valve extenders or will a regular long stem presta be long enough?
Regular length stems work, in fact the longer stems won’t work!!
You’ll be holding the crack pipe on with one hand and using the pump with the other. With a Silca pump I can get the little guys up to 180psi in a one man operation.
i’d wait until you get them to be sure you even need the crack pipe. the head of my floor pump fits in there to inflate the tire just fine (using regular length stems).
You don’t need a crack pipe. I use a 60mm valve stem and it angles out just enough that I can slip the head of my Joe Blow pump head on there with no adapter.
Most any compressed gas will do, but air is cheap and available, so that is the defacto standard used for inflating tires. You can use this abundant gas on most wheel tire combinations in existence.
Actually, I could use helium to make them lighter :). The party store down the street sells do it yourself balloon kits with a big container of helium- I wonder if I could fit the adapter to that? It might help offset the higher wheel weight.
I made an adapter from a valve stem off an old tube, a section of air hose, the “crack pipe” adapter, and two pipe clamps. Small enough to carry in a jersey pocket, but the head on my Blackburn Airstick fits in there just fine for road repairs. But the good thing is that I don’t have to worry about whether a pump head will fit (the standard Silca bell head won’t), and I don’t have to put the “crack pipe” on the floor pump permanently.
