HED 3 Carbon vs. HED 3 Aluminum

Thoughts and suggestions please!

The speed advantage of an aero wheel won’t give you the time back you loose while swimming with a discovery channel bike shirt.

That’s an old pic from one of the first tri’s i did. I don’t have any recent pics on my comp. I don’t race in it now. Quit hatin playa

Thoughts and suggestions please!

they are all carbon
.

Great wheels.I ride the full carbon Hed3c tubular a liitle lighter than the Hed3 clincher with aluminium rim.I would go with full carbon rim as a set of race wheels.More questions?

I’ll side with the aluminum rim model. I found that they tracked better. I really didn’t like the lightness of the carbon model, it definitely did not handle or track as well as the heavier rimmed alum. model.

I’d go with the aluminium. They’ll last longer as the braking surface won’t get cut up and that means you’ll be able to train with them more and they’ll hold their value better. I’ve got some, they’re great wheels.

I just went through the same research, talked to other racers, talked to Tim at HED . . . i ordered Aluminum.

I agree go with the carbon is a great wheel. The only advantage with the Aluminum is the braking and who uses brakes in a time trial…

I would go with aluminum for the reasons already listed above plus, with the all carbon you will have to change out your brake pads every time you race unless you have a bike that is only used for races.

i heard of someone who got the full carbon Hed3Cs and flatted his tub on the very first maiden ride, rode on the flat wheel for about 100m, and cracked up the braking surface so badly that the wheel had to be written off.

YMMV.

I went aluminum as I’m cheap as, and didn’t want to pay for carbon compatible pads, or keep swapping them out, and I had to save up a long time to buy them, so don’t want to be replacing them any time soon.

I use mine only for races and for short test rides before races (to check brakes etc) and for high holidays. They are too expensive for me to wear out the rim being used for training (plus I get the *boost *of go fast race wheels on race days., hehehe

I’m looking at getting HED 60’s or the HED 69. Can I get the clincher wheelset in aliminum or is it all carbon rims? Which would be the better buy?

I’mn not sure what’s available these days.

When I bought (about 2 years ago) all that was available in 650 HED3 was ali rim so it was an easy decision to make

I’d still recommend ali unless you are a lawyer or otherwise made of money. But that’s just me

I have alu h3. flatted in a race and destroyed the alu rim(Tubbie) so flatting can destroy alu or carbon.
clincher rim is stronger.
