Heavy aero clinchers have had a good year

First the elite national crit champ wins on mavic cosmic carbones

then tony martin crushes Spartacus on HED Jets

Then the texas state road race women’s champ wins on HED Jet 9s in one of the hilliest, windiest races in texas (see sig!)

Thats desfick there trying to negotiate something too
.

What is Des riding? Are those 303s? They look too shallow for 404s.

theres a bigger pic in my sig post. let me bring it over to st:

Why is she so much faster than you if you are using the same wheels?

The Flyers’ chick’s seat is too high. Well done to the Cat 3 winner - your girlfriend?

I’d venture that more races are won every year on clinchers than on tubulars, and by a wide margin. I’d also venture that more highly ranked or regarded a race is the more tubulars start to dominate the win column.

Indeed this is why I am only discussing the 3 most important races going on this year

I think after Savageman and a week of bike-only focus I may have caught up!

alex - girlfriend, in a manner of speaking. forever

That course is best suited for a 12-28 and much shallower wheels. Props to Kat for bringing the watts.

is it, in fact, suited for shallower wheels?

why?

I would suggest it is not. We had shallow, much lighter wheels we could have used, and we didn’t.

discuss!

blah blah blah… wheels…blah blah blah.

i LOVE fit women! and this post should have more pictures of them racing bicycles!

ask and ye shall receive - the final 3, the fittest of the fit!

tell you wife good work out there.

i know carrying those heavy wheel around was probably pretty hard…

I used the same wheels in the morning and I got popped off the pack…on a flat stretch.

the course has everything from short steep climbs, longer effort climbs, false flats, exposed flats, fast 2 mile gradual recents. I just feel there is no section of the course where a deeeeep wheel is going to provide any additional benefit. I’m not saying that it can’t be done…(it is very clear that is was done in her case)…I’m just saying that in this course, much less the state champs, a wheel in the 30,35,38 mm range could help ease some stress on the legs. That being said, the winner of the 4s was using 808’s I believe. I guess it boils down to what you are comfortable on in a race. People totally neglect the mental side of equipment choice.

average speed for the women was 19mph

it was extremely windy, which increases the drag advantage of deep wheels.

the weight difference of a jet9 wheelset vs a jet 4 wheelset is only 191 grams

now I’m not sure on the specs on the climbs, I was out there but lets assume that nasty one was 15% grade, 1/4 mile long

191 grams at the wattage the girls was doing would have gone faster up that hill by 0.22 seconds.

and that ignores that the 191 grams are spent reducing aero drag, which is still present.

its surprisingly little isn’t it?

you can play with the numbers:

Serious question. How do you reconcile Cervelos Col de Tipping point where they say that 200 grams less weight would be an advantage over a much more aero frame at less of a grade with your analysis?

Styrrell

I’m certain this ends the clincher versus tubular debate once and for all.
.

2 points there:

  1. that scenario was a longer climb, and thus at much lower wattage. in this race they were hitting 500 watts up the climbs. lower the watts and the balance shifts more towards weight

  2. cervelo did something like use 1/2 the actual aero advantage of the s3 in that analysis, just to be conservative.

  3. the lighter wheels ARE quicker in this scenario (ignoring aerodynamics, maybe still would be, I don’t know). Its just not enough quicker to matter. You would close the 1 meter gap right back up on the back side of the hill.

deep tubies would certainly be an advantage on this course, assuming you glue em right. less weight is good and you don’t need flat kits in a road race. We just don’t happen to own a deep rear tubie.
