Has/does anyone else suffer from heartburn after a run? Ever since I started really training, I can’t shake this heartburn - especially after a run. I potentially know the solutions (no amount of Maalox keeps it away), but does anyone know the cause? Do I need to eliminate things from my diet, like anything overly acidic (e.g., vinegar, tomatoes, etc…)?

I get it when I drink too much coffee (or drink it too close to the run). Fatty foods (like cream tart to go with the coffee ) don’t seem to help either, but coffee is the main culprit in my case.
malte
here, here…get it with coffee, sweets, spicy food etc…
prevacid workds well…
Is it just heartburn or is it reflux as well? Do you burp up bits of your meal(s)? Caffeine is a major relaxer of the hiatal sphincter, which closes off your stomach from your esophagus. Exercise can exacerbate this, with all of the bouncing up and down. Some will experience it when in the aerobars for long periods of time. If it awakens you at night you need medical attention.
I had the problem. Doc put me on Prevacid which helped for a while. Had an endoscopy done to check me out - “grossly incompetent hiatal sphincter” was the diagnosis.
I had to alter my eating habits to include more frequent but smaller meals. As long as I don’t fill my stomach up too much, I have no heartburn/reflux.
If I have too much food in my stomach when I run - heartburn.
Sucks, huh? Well, I’ll check into Prevacid and maybe tweak my diet a bit - but definitely can’t get rid of the coffee!
It definintely sounds like reflux as well. I run on a pretty empty stomach and water seems to exacerbate the problem. While I am not being woken up by it, maybe I’ll check things out with a doc. just in case. Not sure I could make it through life without caffeine though.
gatorade used to aggravate my condition.
I take two prilosec daily and have a different life now that I do. My entire life was built around heartburn and reflux and the management of it for years.
Yeah, I have to be so careful about what I eat. And any drinks/food with sweet and sour in it - forget it (thankfully I hate margaritas). Otherwise I’ll be up all night. I’ll look into Prilosec and Prevacid. I hate to take unecessary meds, so maybe experiment with changing my diet a bit too. I’d be able to deal with it on a day to day basis, but it has gotten so bad on the runs that I can’t go more than 4mi without wanting to puke fire. I’d also hate for this to spiral into something unmanageable.
