Heart rate spike when starting run/bike?

I bought a Garmin Forerunner 305 a few weeks ago and looking at the graphs confirms something I have long thought was gong on. When I start a bike or run work out my HR shoots way up, even when I start at a modest effort. It is like my system is shocked by this. My HR went to 170 just a few minutes into a run yesterday (max is about 180-85) In any event after a few minutes it settles down and everything is cool. It is typical?

Mine does the same thing. My resting HR is in the 70s, when I walk to where I start running it is right around 100, then when I start running it shoots, but settles down after a minute or two.

Me too. Several of my friends say the same thing. I’ll bet it is very common.

I don’t use a HR monitor, but this is the way I always feel when I run. I feel like crap and my HR spikes for the first few minutes and then it begins to settle down.

I find exactly the same thing with my Garmin 405, but only on the run. My max HR is 174 but it will sometimes read 185+ for the first few minutes of the run. I think it’s something to do with the HR strap not having a proper contact with the chest, because my pulse as measured the old fashioned way doesn’t confirm what the 405 is telling me. After about 5 mins it settles down to what it should be (say 130 bpm). If I more carefully wet the chest strap before a run this doesn’t seem to happen.

have had the same thing. A cardiologist friend sez it could be atrial fibrillation. Apparently afib is not uncommon among endurance athletes. since afib can cause you to have a stroke it probably is a good idea to have it checked out by an MD—generalist first, then cardiologist if necessary actually one of the very top athletes in the 50-54 age group has afib and lives with it

Yep it’s typical - also part of why triathlon is hard to really race - makes you feel like that all the time.

Don’t get too carried away believing it to be a medical condition. Chances are it is simply because there is either insufficient contact between the pickup and your skin- use more saliva, conducting gel or whatever else you use. Possibly some static charge - there’s info on that somewhere too. Of course if you feel you need a check up go get one. But we see this quite often with our Garmins when starting out, before sweating provides conductivity.
