Heart Rate Monitor Question

I just got a heart rate monitor for Christmas (Polar RS100). I was wondering how people use theirs as far as workouts and such. Anyone use them for races?

Side Bar: Does anyone know if I can swim in the Polar RS100? I don’t want the chest strap shorting out on me or anything.

Side Side Bar: My brother also got me special “athletic” detergent… Lame.

Maybe your Brother was trying to delicately tell you something!

Umm, I have that stuff for my workout clothes and love it. NOT lame at all.

Swimming with a heart rate monitor is only recommended when used in conjunction with jammers, a snorkel, hand paddles, zoomers and a large bottle of Gatorade at the end of the lane.

Heart Rate Monitors don’t work under water.

I use a hr/gps for all my bike rides and runs (training and raceing). You need to use one for a number of months worth of training and races to start getting some meaningfull information from it. It won’t actually make you run faster, but it will help you pace yourself better so you get a more even over all preformance. Tim

not sure about use in water.
In terms of use for your overall training, good question (seriously) but no simple answer.

The simple “big picture” answer is that a HRM is a good tool to monitor compliance with your training plan.

If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.

Thanks. That’s what I figured. I know people who live by it and other people who will use it occasionally. I was just trying to get some ideas.

Thanks, I just tried it out today on a recovery run. Pretty cool stuff. I’m going to have to dial it in after New Years when I start going hard again.

You can wear belt in the water and not get shocked or short it out. The t-31 HR belt will transmit under water but the coded 31 belt will not. Both are water resistant to 30m if I remember correctly. In tri what’s the most it will be under water 3’…your good to go ;0)
Good luck with your training and have fun with the HR stuff.

Good to know. Thanks.

Some older Polar HR monitors DO work in the water.

And some newer like the rcx5.
