Heard Dan E. speak recently…

And for someone who talks a lot about preparation I must say he was not very prepared to be a speaker. I’m not saying he hasn’t done a lot with wetsuits and bicycles but let’s face it he’s not a professional speaker. Sure he knows a lot about bikes and wetsuits and he took a business as far as he could. His “talk” was scattered. He kept throwing out all the different components of a bicycle to impress us. There was no focal point in messaging. It was obvious he was winging it and relying on what he’s done in the pass for respect. He seemed to be someone concerned with only the top 10% of triathletes. He throw out some numbers that the triathlon market is only made up of 200,000 individuals. I thought I had heard him wrong but he said it again. He also suggested he is a top finisher in his age group and has the best bike splits. Any skeptic can take those figures to the internet and find out if he is full of it or speaking the truth. I did the checking and he is exaggerating. I was disappointed in the overall discussion. I would suggest he train more for these types of engagements and maybe get a coach or a feedback mechanism. The one good think I did hear him do was admit he didn’t know the answer to something. It was near the end of the talk so at list he didn’t wing everything. Overall the use of time was disappointing and after researching his performance…he could use some work just like the rest of us. No Super Dan… just a tall guy t,he looks to be in his mid 50’s who does triathlons and is a MOP’er.

…is that really your first post or did you change your name to keep your children safe?

Run? Why. feedback is good. Do you think I cry in my masters class when I am coached on how to perform better. Feedback is good. I am helping him. If there were others at the talk maybe the can BE HONEST and help him too.

Troll.

Clean up your grammar, spelling, and punctation, jackass. Then you’ll have a tad more credibility. I hope no one else even responds.

And for someone who talks a lot about perpetration I must say he was not very prepared to be a speaker.<<

Maybe you want to check dictionary.com? Perpetration? What crime did Dan commit? Did you mean preparation?

Anyhoo, maybe you caught him on a bad night. He spoke at my tri club and got very high ratings from everyone.

clm

Hey maybe Dan will read this and see that you are drafting him so close that your shoulders are resting on his seat and reward you. Spelling = credibility not facts right? Check his results times. He is not consistently 1 or 2 in his age group and he is does not have the fastest bike splits. How’s that for credibility? I hope you get a gold star from Dan. Best of luck to you.

Yep thisis the first one. He invited us to check this forum out. I figured I would pass my on feedback. He enjoys the forum and all of you.

I’m sure Dan will appreciate your feedback…however…since you are on his turf…slagging him (even in a constructive manner) probably isn’t your best course of action. Perhaps using the personal message method of delivery might have been a better approach. You can understand where a forum full of people dedicated to the creator of said forum might take offense to such a post…especially if it is your first.

There’s a widespread, insidious conspiracy afoot to piss off every tri forum’s owner/operator, and shut down the free flow of information in the triathlon world. I believe either the USAT or Gerard is behind it.

Gordo’s place is next.

I think since A)Gerard is a reg here and B)we’re all well acquainted with Dan and his love for USAT…we can deduce that if it is to be either…it would likely be the latter.

Is that what kind of place this is? To agree with the owner? I would hope not. Reminds me of that super bowl monster.com ad from a couple of years ago with the kids saying I" want to climbs to middle management"….“I want to be a yes man. Yes sir…right away sir” This is the only contact information Dan gave my group. If he boots me then this isn’t the open forum I need to be a part of. After all its just an opinion and it looks like people who weren’t even at the talk around going to praise him. So he should get an ego boost.

1)Well, first, Dan and I are about the same age and I usually do pretty well in my age group…at the small, local races I do. Dan tends to play in the big leagues when he races…and while he may not always be on the podium, he would kick my age group winning behind if I played in the same game with him.

  1. He probably would be the first to admit that he is a work in progress in a lot of different ways. We all are. He is good at some things (envisioning alot of what we currently know as triathlon), not so good at others (politician). Just like all of us.

You gave your opinion on his performance and your disappointment with it. Nothing wrong with that. You had high expectations and maybe he didn’t quite meet them. But its to his credit that you had those expectations in the first place.

Maybe you are right. I didn’t think about it like that. Thanks for pointing that out.

man…me and communication are not getting along these days
Not saying you need to be a yes man…but to dump that kind of comment out into the open is really just asking for a tongue lashing. Maybe none of us have ever heard him speak (then again maybe some have) and now we’re going to go into one of his talks being set up for disappointment. Thanks for that. Sure there is the likelihood of Dan taking what you said to heart and stepping up to his A game for his next gig. I still don’t think it was appropriate for you do voice your opinion in the manner in the open. Again…being new here sure doesn’t do a lot for your credibility. I’m sure some are already asking…and who the fuck exactly are you to be picking apart an icon in the sport. You a motivational speaker or something? If so…way to go man…good job motivating Dan to give a crap about your thoughts.
You don’t need to be a yes man to show a little respect and diplomacy.

Can you be a bit more specific? What was the venue? What was the stated purpose & subject matter of the talk? You say his talk was scattered… well, what sorts of things did he talk about? If he was primarily fielding questions at a bike shop then RU being fair to expect a full-blown symposium-quality speech about “bike manufacturing in the mid-west since the early 1930s”?

“He kept throwing out all the different components of a bicycle to impress us.” - Again, RU sure? “Derailleur” is a pretty cool word. I like “crank”, too, but do you really think Dan was using these words to impress you? Or was it simply because the talk had something to do with bicycles?

“No Super Dan.” Dude, you mean the guy forgot to wear his cape???

I would suspect that Dan probably speaks like he spells, at least on his posts here on the forum. He needs a good spell checker and I guess a good speech writer.

But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know what he types/writes about.

Icons don’t need work? We should move to the right and just let them pass? Wow. I think Mark was on to something. I did have high expectations. Maybe to high. Maybe I set him up for failure. However, this is the only contact info I had for him. I like the idea of free speech. That is why I like you expressing your colorful opinion. On a side note no, I am not a motivation speaker who lives down by the river. I am just a serious athlete bitten by the tri-bug. I do not believe everything I hear, read, or see. When something doesn’t sound right, I question it. Just like you questioning my post. I can appreciate that. Sound like you have some passion. That;s a good thing.

“But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know what he types/writes about.”

hey, i was riveting. i even rivited myself.

Well it was postioned as “Dan Emphfield, triathlete and publisher of Slowtwitch.com, will be the featured speaker” He spoke for about 45 mintues then opened for questions.

Those are cool words but Dan has a special list of Bicyle componets and measurements he likes to throw out and then say…I don’t know if all of you understand what I’m talking about but…" Saying this once is oke OK but 3 times? what was he trying to prove.

Yea no cape.

Look at my posts…not the best grammar there. My point was he is just one of us. I think Mark really answered my statement. I expected to much.
