Is the instant plain oats as healthy as the plain oats that take 30 minutes to cook?
Not exactly but I feel close enough for the ease. The whole oats (especially when you buy the kind at specialty stores, steel cut or Irish, or is it Scottish?) has a bit more fiber and I am sure the nutrients are slightly better. I believe the fat/net carb/protein numbers are the same.
The kind in the envelopes are a waste of time. Might as well eat frosted flakes.
I buy the quick oats and mix in milk, brown sugar & cinnamon. Takes about a minute in the microwave. Even my kids like it but I am sure they would rather have a pop tart ![]()
I do the old fashioned kind with added soy granules, fruit, soy milk and a bit of that evil brown sugar…heck, a girl’s got to live a little! Takes about 4 mins total in the microwave. A double serving lasts a long time.

my “brown” sugar is turbinado, so I guess not refined anyway and I can control the amount ![]()
and my point was the content of fiber and protein.
I heard not. In the same way that white bread isn’t as healthy as wheat.
Well, my kids prefer the colored sugary kind. They have crazy colors now, blue (as if it were blueberry), reds, pinks… Just plain gross.
Now me, I’m an old fashioned kinda gal and still have a special place in my heart for the brown sugar (the refined kind!) and cinnamon, FROSTED!!! But I can only take one before my head hurts.
Where in Cali are you, Larry? I grew up in huntington beach and miss it immensely!!! Even though I am there about 3-4 times a year I still miss it.
My “healthy” oatmeal is the quick type of Quaker Oats (only takes a minute or two anyway). I mix in 1 cup of lowfat cottage cheese with the oatmeal (about 3/4 cup uncooked) and then put about a teaspoon of that nonfat Hazelnut Coffee Mate liquid stuff in for a little extra flavour. Sounds kind of weird but I was eating it one morning when I had friends visiting and they tried it and have it all the time now.
Try adding s little wheat germ and flaxseed meal along with a few nuts and some fruit. Put a little milk and maybe some molasses. Cinnamon helps, too.
I use quaker rolled oats and I grind them in a coffee grinder with some flaxseed and then add yogurt, some water, blueberries and raisins. That’s my breakfast every morning (plus a double espresso). Around 600-700 calories. and I’m on the bike or running 30 min after waking up. I can practicially drink it, so its almost like a smoothie. It also works great as pre race food. Yogurt is much better then milk for digestion and minimizes “digestion related issue” during racing.
I like the quick oats with peanut butter and apple sauce mixed in for a quick and tastey breakfast.
I’m gonna try that Dev. Thanks for the recipe. Do ya think it will if fuel me for my 29 mile commute in the morning?
