I’ve purchased two of these this summer for my fiance, here are the pros and cons:
Easy and low maintenance - Check (tomato plants require the most work, and it’s not much)
Convenient - absolutely
Great taste - definitely (the basil and lettuce smell and taste awesome, esp. the basil)
Quantity Supplied - Plentiful - my girl was eating at least two salads a week and was getting enough basil to make her pesto
Nutritional density - don’t have the foggiest idea either way, there are no pesticides and very little in the form of nutrient tablets are used, I assume it’s no worse than buying non-organic at the grocery store, in my unscientific opinion.
Cost - Cha-ching (that’s the sound of the cash registers at Aerogarden)
Perfect - hell no, some of the seeds don’t grow as well (i.e. cilantro), which has now been discontinued. The were offering strawberry, but discontinued after a few months. You can mix some different seeds (3 lettuce and 4 herbs), but the growing is not perfect. 10 weeks after planting the tomato garden, the unit started shorting out, the plants died. Aerogarden replaced the base and the seed kit with no hassle, just lost over 10 weeks of time on the tomatos.
Seed kits used so far are herb, lettuce and working on tomatoes. Don’t order an additional herb seed kit as the units come with them by default.
