We’ve all been subject to the ridicule of our more corpulent co-workers pointing out that “xyz athlete just dropped dead…” Needless to say, there can be a difference between fitness and health.
I just completed a blood draw and health risk assessment…It took a total of 30 minutes and provided outstanding insight into areas where I can improve my health (and possibly my fitness) for 2007.
It’s easy for “serious athletes” to overlook common health problems (hypertension, cholesterol levels, etc.). I’d challenge each of us to take some time in December to ensure we’re not just fit, but healthy as well.
Go get that blood work done, complete a health risk assessment, and take some other steps to ensure you are on the right track for 2007.
Contact your insurer…Many insurance companies provide “health and wellness” programs which are included in the price of your insurance to help stimulate healthier living.
Your employer may have a program…I completed mine through Intel Corporation’s HRA initiative.
Ask your PCP…He/she can conduct your physical and ensure you get a blood draw (most insurance companies pay for the draw because it’s cheaper to prevent illness than to treat it later).
There may be local clinics located in your pharmacy which can do the work (Wal Mart is also testing these types of mini-clinics)…These can be inexpensive and convenient for many people.
I mention it because despite doing two IMs this year, I’m still running a bit high on the LDLs which has encouraged me to take a better look at my diet.
