I underwent surgery yesterday to repair a tendon in my ankle. The doc did say that the tear was larger than he expected but still less than 50% so they were able to cut out the torn area and do whatever repair work was necessary. Also on of the 3 major ligaments of the ankle had a small tear and was also repaired. He said he then put it all back together and tightened up the retinacular as well to help hold things in place better.
So, on to my question. After a hard weight lifting session many suggest eating protein to help the body repair and rebuild the torn muscle fibers. Does something similar hold true for ligaments and tendons? I did not know if an increase in protein or other foods/supplements would aid in recovery. I have been taking Glucosamine/MSM/Condroitin (sp).
Just looking to get myself into healthy operating shape sooner than later. Thanks all.
It’s a myth. Your body is only capable of utilizing a certain amount of dietary protein. The rest will be broken down and excreted in your urine. You have to have adequate protein which is easily provided in a normal diet but taking protein supplements, etc will not speed up tissue repair.

I’m glad then that I am not one of those people spending large quantities of money of GNC and other protein shakes just to flush them down the toilet.
For now, I guess I will just sit here in a cast and let my body fix its self. Thanks.
