1 - I have a stock Cervelo headset…any ideas on an approximate torque setting for the headset cap? I read somewhere (Chris King???) that is was 4-10 in-lbs (15 in-lbs max) - but I know it depends on the manufacturer.
2 - Do headsets have a lifespan like other components? Mine is 3 years old and prolly 10k miles on it. No real problems…just curious. Worthy upgrade?
1- I don’t think it’s that critical…as you’re just holding the cap in place. “Snug” works for me.
2- Headseats can become brinnelled when poorly adjusted, not lubricated, and/or subjected to extreme or prolonged stress in the straight-ahead position. Happened to the FSA integrated 'set on my Felt with about 10K miles on it…feels like the steering becomes indexed or notchy. Not sure how “normal” it is, but, it can happen.
3- For an integrated headset (if that’s what’s on your Cervelo), I’m not aware of any maintenance (then again, maybe that’s why mine brinnelled!)
The easiest way to determine setup the headset cap is to turn the front wheel perpendicular to the frame, hold the front brake and rock the bike back adn forth in the direction that the frame is oriented. With your fingers on the headset, a properly tightened headset won’t wiggle at all. To tell if it’s too tight just turn the handlebars back and forth. The headset should be loose enough to allow the handlebars to turn freely and also not have any play when you rock the bike back/forth with the front wheel perpendicular.
2 & 3) Headset lifespan depends on the headset. Ones that have sealed bearings should last a very long time provided they aren’t overtightened. Non sealed ones require a little more maintenance to ensure that they are properly greased and that the bearings, the retainer hasn’t worn, or the cups aren’t getting pitted.
Just check the headset every couple of months to make sure it’s working smoothly. Maybe pull it out once a year and apply a new layer of grease between it and the other metal surfaces to prevent it from making any noises. Sounds like yours is OK if you haven’t noticed anything wrong with it.
