Heading to Canada to Race

Anyone raced in the Canada Iron 113 in Ottawa?

I’ll be there.

Have you done the race before? Any info on the bike course?

Have you done the race before? Any info on the bike course?

Yes, it’s flat and fun. It’s a multi-loop course (6 laps for the 1/2) but it goes by really quickly. It’s a fun course with lots of fun people.

Just the info I was looking for. I’ll be making the trek from florida so the course should be just right for me. Thanks!

My wife did the 113 one year. I did the sprint instead of the 1/2 and then after finishing went to a pub along the bike route that had an outdoor cafe where I ate lunch, drank a few beers and watched her suffer on the bike as I cheered her on with my beer in hand. Another time I did the 1/2 aquabike which was the 1/2 without the run.

It’s a fun course. The swim is in muddy Mooney’s Bay, but the bike is a nice 15 kms loop that is completely closed to traffic. There is a full iron, 1/2, aquabike, sprint, sprint du and try-a-tri all going on at the same time so it can get a little hairy on the bike course until the short events are over. The course is mostly flat. The run is scenic along the canal and quite enjoyable. Overall, it’s an enjoyable event and Ottawa and area is a nice place to visit.

I’ll be there for twice the fun… Canadian 226.

Double up and join me. Terry will let you switch races pretty easily.

The run is also quite flat and follows along the canal as a 5 km out and back.
The swim is also flat as it is in a bay of a medium sized river, never seen it wavey.

The race is indeed fun. There’s usually a group of us fortysomethings here in Ottawa who duke it out. It gets a little busy for a lap or two but not unmanageable. You can see where the other guys are each lap. Wind usually picks up by halfway through the bike. Practice your turnaround skills, as there are 9 of them. Road is still in good shape. Mooney’s Bay is murky but shouldn’t be any bacteria issues. Terry changed the run last year to 3 loops of 7k; best thing is the last 200m of the race are on the track, so you can pretend you are about to win olympic gold in the marathon as you enter the stadium if you like.

And the price is right - $120 CDN (about $110 US)

Don’t forget to take your ID.

Many, many years back we went to Mont St. Anne for a big Mountain bike race and 4 of us drove up from Philadelphia. As we got to the Canadian border one guy on the trip had no ID with him because he thought “Since I wasn’t driving I didn’t think I needed an ID.”
When asked, what about the border crossing? He then babbled about not taking am ID when he crosses into New Jersey or New York either.

We were lucky that they let hgim across the border anyway because we would have abandoned the dude (Wyatt)

Oh yeah - I forgot we were a sovereign country up here. You wouldn’t be let in with that story nowadays (yankees can have enhanced drivers licences in lieu of passports Cdns need to show their passport now).

The summer of hell up here (wettest July in history) has turned this week into true summer: 30C (86F) temps for 5-6 days in a row (just as I began my time off!) and I think the long-range is for good conditions for the next month.

But seriously - we welcome all athletes from the land of the Great Satan. If an STer is stuck for accommodations, I can put 1-2 people up; I am a 10-minute bike ride to T1. The good thing is that this race is on saturday, so you still have two days left in the long wknd.
