HDTV / Audio Quesiton

OK, my old tube TV broke, so I have now purchased a smart TV, sound bar, and blu-ray player.

I have all hooked up and it is working. I don’t have an hd cable box yet, but I just checked on that and can actually get more channels, HD, and faster internet than I am paying today. They have some strange pricing structures.

My question. I have the TV connected to the sound bar with optical cable. I have the blu-ray player connected to an older home theater system with audio coax, and it connects to TV with hdmi cable.

I thought I would be able to play movies with both home theatre system and sound bar, but they sounds are slightly out of synch. Does anyone know why?

By home theater system do you mean an audio receiver? If so will it accept hdmi?

I’d drop the audio coax and run everything over hdmi, through the receiver, to the TV. If your receiver is too old and doesn’t take hdmi input then you may need to fine tune the audio delay.

Yes, it is an older 5.1 system with no hdmi input. it does have digital optical input, which is what the sound bar has too. I think there is a splitter you can buy for optical cable. Perhaps I could send hdmi to tv and then split the optical from the tv to sound bar and home theater. I wonder if that would be in synch?

Whats your speaker set up? Are you saying you have a sound bar in addition to 5.1 speakers?

Yes, I had an older dolby 5.1 system. I bought a sound bar with subwoofer with the new tv as I figured that was easier to operate if watching tv. I was thinking would use the older home theatre for movies. I was experimenting to see which sounded better for movies and noticed they are not in synch. If they were in synch, I would think it would sound good with 2 subwoofers, sound bar in addition to the center speaker. Then the other 4 speakers at a wider spacing in front and back fill in the sound. Not sure if can do this with this older system or it never works to play sound through 2 systems.

Here’s my take. If sound were better using two separate systems then we would all have it, already. Me thinks you should pick one.

Thanks, My old home theatre system was not that good of one, but with 5+1 it does fill the room more so it feels like the sound is around you more for a movie. However since it was not a great system, the center speak is not as good as how the sound bar sounds, but the sound bar does not surround you with sound as well as the home theatre. So someday I will probably get a new better home theatre system, but until then the 2 together if in synch would probably be better than either by themselves.

I’m on my second hdtv after only 4 days. First one had left side of screen darken like a shadow. Fortunately I got a full refund and switched from a vizio to a sony. Hopefully it is better. I also purchased a 5yr warranty which I never do. Hopefully that means I will have no issues.

Hook up stereo only. Sound bar is a poor mans audio system IMO.

I think the issue as someone else pointed out is one is running optical and one is running standard coax. But even if you get them in sync, the sound bar will be a poor replacement for a dedicated center channel speaker. A center channel is only going to play the center channel a receiver sends to it. Your sound bar is going to play everything - voices, fill, all sounds. So you’re basically playing 2 separate systems and your imaging will be off.

I can’t the question specifically but I installed a new TV setup with soundbar recently and had a few questions about to settings, soundbar, etc and used avsforum.com a bunch during the research for the tv, soundbar, setup, etc…very very helpful and knowledgable folks on that forum. GL…
